One can only feel sympathy and empathy for you (with you). Ghost has been there and in exactly the same position you were in at a famous Kolej on the South Coast in 2003.

The same kinds of outrageous behaviours were in evidence in the classes ghost had the misfortune to teach (grades 5 and 6). The kids shouted, hit each other, ran around the class, threw objects around the class, hit other kids, and the list went on - it was an absolute nightmare.

Ironically, the end of this saga came rather swiftly for ghost, when during one horrendous class, a student came running toward the exhausted teacher who was trying (in vain) to maintain some semblance of law and order in the class. To make a long story short, the loping student ran toward ghost who put its arms out to halt the progress of the student, with the student ending up connecting with the whiteboard next to ghost.

Student then visited the Kolej doctor for treatment, and ghost was given its marching papers that very same day from the Kolej, which was a blessing in disguise.

To get back to your problem, in all honesty one feels that there is very little you can do, as it appears that the class you run has now got the upper hand, and once that stage is reached, it is difficult to turn things around.

Unless you get concrete and permanent help from the Turkish Administrators, then you can only hope for some days being better than others - all to do with biorhythms and stuff like that. Kids were worse on certain days and slightly better on others.

For ghost the noise level in the class was so bad that it (ghost) was forced to wear small ear plugs to class (ghost found the shouting and screaming to be very trying on the system).

Turkish students in the Elementary sections of Private schools were easily the worst students ghost has ever taught - and that includes teaching stints in many countries including France, Britain, Canada, Guatemala, Dominican Republic and now Taiwan.

Good luck, but if things get too bad you should tell the Administrators that if nothing is done you will walk.

That sounds exactly like Dutch kids! Like ghost said, if it gets out of hand after the beginning it is hard to change things.
Be strict and very consequent from the beginning. Are there some kind of rules at school for punishment? Can you expell kids from the class-room and if yes, is there a follow up for it? Can you get support from the principal?
Class-room management is something you can learn, but at first it is like hell. Your situation sounds like mine a year ago and after I learned from my mistakes it is better this year.

A friend and ex-colleague who should remain nameless had a method for dealing with kids:

Pull them out of the class, stand them with their back to the wall, stand a couple of feet in front of them and speak very softly. They inevitably lean forward to hear what you are saying. SHOUT suddenly and they will withdraw, hitting their head on the wall. Teacher didn't touch them.....

I'm not endorsing this. Just reporting it.

As a former teacher of some of those crazy children I came up with a few ideas for myself.

-get them moving or doing involved activities. Like letting them write at the board, drawing, etc.
- play atleast 1 game per class. Most kids has their favourites and they sometimes forgot the building part of a word - building exercise.
- showing a video or listening to music.

I kept some to no control of these children classes to my western standards of the teacher in front of the class and students in their seats learning but my students would swarm me and hug me and tell the administrators I was their favourite teacher. Maybe because unlike a Turkish I did not scream at them to bully them into order.
So I guess I am saying go in prepared and roll with the punches
