|
|
Hello:
I have to teach a two week unit on reading from an EF storybook. I have no idea who wrote these books, but they are boring, devoid of any culture significance for Chinese students and generally a waste of time. I have a hard time trying to get excited about teaching from a book the students can't possible enjoy.
My questions are three:
1) How do you get excited, pumped, etc. to teach something that you know is a waste of time?
2) Are there any resources you would recommend (reading materials, etc.) for Chinese students that would be better?
3) What activities would you use to make the reading of this dry tome something enjoyable?
Hope you can help,

Fallon,
One thing I would do in a situation like yours is try to adapt the material so it is more relevant to them. Does the school want you to strictly follow this material?
You asked about another text...I know many Chinese students use the "New Concepts" text books for reading short articles. I've only had a little experience with these books, but from what I've seen the articles are at least somewhat interesting.
If you want some genuine articles that will interest your students you can also check out the "Oddly enough" link in the yahoo.com news section. I have found this to be an interesting and humorous source for reading and later discussion.
Hope this helps... |
