ok- here's the deal. i have an MA in tesol, over 6 years of teaching at the college level in the US, but no experience abroad, nor have i ever looked for a job abroad. i would like to teach at a university in mexico, not picky about where, but want to start a year from now- fall '06. what are my chances? where should i start? perhaps this has been covered in posts you can refer me to.
thanks for helping me make this happen!

You would probably be well served by an exploratory trip to Mexico, long before fall '06. There will be opportunities all over the country for you, with a dense nest in the centra states (DF, Queretaro, Hidalgo, Puebla, Guanajuato, Jalisco, and others). It's much easier in your case to make contacts locally.

I also think it would be a good idea to make an exploratory visit to the parts of Mexico that appeal to you -- first, do some research regarding climate, geography, sizes of cities, etc. -- and check out the university job situation in those areas. Keep in mind that almost any institution can call itself a university in this country. Even many legitimate universities in Mexico may not be anything like what you picture them to be.

That may be one of the reasons why the function is provided. Wink

In this city, it's pretty easy for native English speakers even with limited qualifications to find jobs at certain institutions that call themselves universities. At what I consider legitimate universities, it's next to impossible to walk in and get hired . . . although being in the right place at the right time, it could happen, so it's not completely impossible. Most people who work at legitimate universities have been in the area for some time teaching at other schools first, then were hired very part-time at a university, and gradually built up more hours. "Real" universities in this city have an extremely low turn-over of teachers and usually don't employ very many foreigners.

At the university where I teach, I've never seen jobs advertised. The few times that new part-time EFL teachers have been hired since I've been working there, somebody-important's relative had been given the job before I even knew there was a job opening available.
