Hi! I'd like some advice from the knowledgeable TESOL teachers out there. I have a BA in English, and I am currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Teaching degree. When I finish, I'll be certified by the state of Missouri to teach TESOL for grades K-12 and English/Language Arts for grades 5-12. What I'd like to know is, will any of this be advantageous in my search for a job teaching TESOL overseas (preferably somewhere in Europe)?
My ideal situation would be teaching in Italy...although I know that's gonna be next to impossible, considering I'm an American. But if anyone has any advice about finding a job in Italy, that would be much appreciated, as well.
Thanks so much for any advice! |

Hey there,
Is you MaT from the school for international training, by any chance? I've been looking at their program...
In any case- Italy: TEFL teachers from the US have a hard time finding legal work in language institutes there, but with your qualifications, I would look into international schools. There are a fair few that hire American teachers, and are able to arrange proper visas for qualified people.
If you were only carrying a TEFL cert, I would say forget Italy- but with your qualifications, if you do a good job search, checking international and military schools, I think your possibilities are good.
Regards,
Justin |

His program wouldn't be an SIT MAT since certification for SIT's is with the state of Vermont, not Missouri.
PM me if you want to know about SIT's AYMAT (academic year MAT (which has a certification and an Internationalist track)) or the SMAT (summer MAT (no cert.)). I'm pretty decently in the know on both. |

Justin, thanks for the help! I've considered applying at international and military schools in Italy and moving on to TESOL there if I can get a visa.
And as Revenant pointed out, my program is in Missouri...at Missouri State University, to be exact. I'm hoping it will get me where I want to go. |
