I will be leaving Japan soon, and was wondering about the pension refund. Specifically, I do not trust my current employer to handle it in a timely manner, if at all. Someone told me there are companies who will do the legwork, though I have not heard anything about these places. Do they exist? Anybody have any stories, good/bad/ugly about them? Any help will be appreciated. thanks

Not sure what you mean here: monthly pension premiums (not refunds) are paid as part of the national pension to the government. Interac is supposed to take it out of your salary with health insurance if you are full time. The money does not go to Interac.

Pension refunds are paid when you return to your home country and apply for a refund of the premiums you paid each month. You dont apply to Interac for a refund but the Social welfare office in the area you live. You get back 2.4 months worth of salary if you pay in for 36 months.

And what do you do if you find out that your company never paid into the system on your behalf, even if you worked for them full time?

It seems to mean you were never enrolled and you can not get refunds for something you did not pay into.

The thing is in Japan, language school companies break the law on the health/pension scheme all the time (as the school doesnt consider you to be full time and dont enrol you when they should legally) and there is no penalty for non-compliance and the government wont make the company pay up.

The pension is not designed as a one-three year forced savings plan but as a pension for one's old age. Are you planning to work at the company 25 years to collect your pension? You can always sue them for not enrolling you. Every second foreigner on here is complaining becuase their employer is signing them up in the health/pension and having to pay high monthly premiums.

If you are still in Japan, you could report your former employer and they may forced back pay both the employee and employer portions of the pension contribution bill for the last two years. Then you could leave the country and either transfer to the system in your home country or get a the pension refund, from a pension you never even paid into, depending on where you are from.
