i wrote that negative post about inlingua quito but now i thought i should contribute the advice and information id have for someone going to quito:
- if u have the time and money get a work visa. allows u to work at public and private schools, which are supposed to pay better and offer better hours and benefits. i actually dont know how to get a work visa but i think its worth looking into
- i was going out twice a week and cooking almost all my meals at home and spending 90-100 a week. rent will probably be about 110-150
- the best place to look for apartments is in the internet cafes and hostels in the mariscal (the mariscal is around where colon and juan leon mera intersect). i stayed in a great hostel for a few months called casa de la nina. i paid 120 a month including utilities and had a big room and nice little common area to hang out in. the lady who runs the place, carmen, is real nice and speaks perfect english. its on la nina y juan leon mera, about a block south of the marriot (which is massive- cant miss it). the nice part about having the marriot there is that they sell the miami herald plus i used to watch nfl games in the bar, sitting on a big comfortable couch in front of a big screen tv, and they never made me buy anything.
- going out i usually went to shooters, on jl mera y calama, which is the only decent sit down bar in the mariscal. then theres loads of dance clubs in that area if u want to go out afterwards
- as for safety, if you use common sense quitos a fairly safe place. it can be dangerous but if youre smart about it and keep your eyes open you should be alright.
so if youre going, good luck. id be happy to answer any questions thru email
