This can be a dangerous topic so I ask that we step lightly to keep this thread from being locked or deleted. My aim is not to step on any toes.

Reading on the Turkish Daily News website this morning, I have learned about the Ottoman-Armenians During the Breakup of the Empire: Scientific Responsibility and Democracy Problems Conference being suspended by the courts and about author Orhan Pamuk's indictment because of remarks he made regarding the "Armenian incident".

Why is the Armenian issue not open for discussion in Turkey? Does anyone know unbiased sources on the net that I might learn the facts?

New York Times article on conference in Istanbul (I don't think registration is necessary to read the article):

Does anyone think I will have any difficulties (i.e. finding work, apartment, etc.) having an armenian surname in Turkey?

Thanks.
