I just called USAA, and it's true, to open a checking or savings account, you don't need any military affiliation. However, I asked about ATM fees while withdrawing abroad, and was told the customer is responsible for any non-USAA fees that another institution charges. I asked if the fees are reimbursed and the rep said only if it's a fee that is "apparent" to USAA, but not if it's "included in the conversion process" (I guess if it's clear enough to them, they'll reimburse you.) I asked if there's a list of institutes they can recommend to go to so one can get reimbursed, and she said there isn't. So far I can't see much advantage to switching to USAA since it's likely I'll still get hit with fees. Has anyone actually gotten fees reimbursed from this company? |

Ive never paid more than 5.00 U.S. for a withdraw, so it isnt TOO bad.
My bank charges me 2.50 and then the argentine banks often charge me about the same. Nothing is apparant either on my billing ... I just did the conversion manually and realized how much they were taking out.
I would recommend you just use your bank in the U.S. and just take out money as needed. If you are living in a secure place, take out 1000 pesos each time and stash what you dont need away. |

I just checked my account balance on-line (on USAAs website) and under Deposits it has a $2.00 credit for ATM Surcharge Rebate. I know, Im rich...but hey, the way I look at it, thats two free Emanadas from Solo Empanada! On a more serious note, I do have about 5 or 6 withdrawals from ATMs in Argentina, so I dont know if this Rebate is just the first of a few more, or the total reimbursement for the billing cycle. Ill try to keep you posted. |
