Hello,

I lived in Tainan for 3.5 years, loved it - and Taiwan in general. I'm now teaching at Hong Kong University so am obviously still in Asia, and want to show my Quebeqois husband around a bit of southern Taiwan. He has only been to Taipei once for a conference.
I would like to fly into Kaoshiung for his birthday next month then rent a motorbike (or car if I asolutely have to - would prefer a motorbike) in Kaoshiung then drive up to Tainan and into the mountains east of Tainan for a couple of days to show him around. I've got an international driver's license with a motorcycle permit, learned how to ride a motorbike in Tainan (for whatever that is worth!), have ridden motorbikes in India, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong and Canada - so I'm quite confident on a bike. My question is this: where would you recommend I rent a bike for just a few days in either Kaoshiung or Tainan? Also, any recommendations on a nice place to stay in Tainan? I know a few hotels - but don't know if they exist now (havent' been to Tainan since 1997).

Can provide info on where to stay and things to do in HK as a trade...?

I don't know much about renting bikes, but I think there are a few places near the Tainan train station.

I would recommend staying at the Puyuma Hotel (Min Chuan Road, Sec. 2, No. 118, 7F). Their phone number is (06) 227-5566. It's not far from the train station. Everything you want in a hotel, clean, quiet, new, but not expensive. If you can read Chinese, this is the webpage introducing the hotel:
