Hi there,
I'm new on here and just wanted to ask those in the know a quick question.
Having read many of the topics on here over the past few months I feel certain you are all about to shout me down over my question, but I do want to hear honest opinions please, whether I like them or not!
I am desperate to go to the UAE, preferably Abu Dhabi. I have my own reasons for wanting to be there but they are valid. I've read on here a lot people asking questions about teaching out there and you seem to advise people of my limited experience to go further east!
I've got one year's teaching experience in a "light" Muslim country. I've got my CELTA and am kind of great! My question is this, can I just up sticks, get out there and find something, even if it is just private tuition? I can't find much on the net for people of my limited experience. I know I should probably just give up the ghost and go somewhere else but I don't want to give up yet!!
I think I might be offered a job at Sohar uni in Oman, sould I go for tat and just drive to Abu Dhabi as and when I can?
Sorry this is long and probably very annoying for all of you, but I had to ask!!
Many thanks,
Lisa |

That is an easy question... take the contract in Sohar if it provides benefits (housing, tickets, etc). You can drive to Abu Dhabi during holidays. (I assume that there is even a bus)
With your lack of credentials and experience you would starve to death on what you would be able to get walking in for a job and doing privates. You couldn't even afford to rent a flat, no less eat...
With a couple of years at Sohar to put on your CV, you would have a better chance of picking up something decent eventually in Abu Dhabi.

Too true! Sohar Uni is a decent enough place, I believe, and you were lucky to get a job there at your stage of your career. Go for it and forget about anything in UAE till you've got a little more to offer. |

Ok, thanks for your honesty! I guessed that was pretty much what you'd say! |

PS And good luck! Sorry, I came across a bit more brusquely than I intended - answered in a rush, I suppose. |

No worries. I was expecting it anyway.
It's confirmed, I have the job in Oman and I get flights paid for, housing and transport benefits. So, it looks like I'll be going to Oman then! |
