Do the students still stand to answer a question? When I was there many years ago, it was said that they were going to do away with that custom and just have the children remain in their seats to answer.

I work in a private JHS/SHS. Never seen a student stand to give an answer in the last 4 years.

I have been recently teaching in public elementary and junior high schools where some teachers would have the students stand up to answer a question, but it was not done 100% of the time. Although one teacher always had the students stand up at the beginning of the class to answer what time is it, day, weather.

some strict Japanese teachers make their students stand up if they forget their textbook, dictionary, can`t answer the question, etc.

Depends on the teacher.... I'd say that in my own experience, 90% of grade 7 kids (chu-gakkou ichi-nensei) DO stand up to answer.... That, being a carry-over from elementary where also 90% stand... By grade 8 and 9, I'd say the number drops to zero very quickly (unless they have a very strict homeroom teacher)...

Used to see that in public high school back in the day, more than 10 years ago, depends entirely on the teacher.

I make my high school students stand for any kind or practice activity or reading demonstration. It helps elevate enthusiasm and and volume. For a quick question or any sort of translation I let them sit. It's also a handy way to deal with disruptive student or sleepers without resorting to scolding. Be careful with teenage male sleepers though. Biology may present them will an embarassing situation.

I do sometimes ask students to stand, in order to begin a communicative activity.

As recently as last year, I also asked problem students to stand, more to hassle them than anything else. Also, I had students come to the front of the class for oral work, don't anymore.

I might, and did in fact, ask junior high school and lower students to stand sometimes in the course of oral presentation.

Yeah, standing is good. Very important in oral communication, too.
