|
|
My wife and I are heading down to catch one of the last days of the Aichi Expo near Nagoya...
We plan on heading down on Sunday afternoon, going out on the town Sunday night, sleeping somewhere and heading to expo the next morning.... We will be driving home in the evening.
Given the event at hand, I REALLY don't know if I'm going to have ANY luck finding any accomodations down there -- it's probably either all booked up full or too expensive, or both. AND it's a bit last-minute.... Can anyone recommend anything viable to me? Suggestions for a place to crash?
As a last resort, we can find an out-of-the-way parking lot somewhere and camp out in our van -- we've done it before a few times, so I suppose we could do it again. Hey, the roadside rest-stops on the expressway might be OK -- safe, anyway...
Any Dave's readers have a free parking spot for the night where we can camp out? ...Didn't think so....
Thanks in advance, everyone!

First piece of advice- Don't come. Seriously you're coming before it all shuts up right? well so is every other joker in the country.
Second piece- Go in the evening, tix are half price so you won't miss the money when you are dissappointed.
Finally- try places like Toyota, Toyahashi, Okazaki even Gifu for accomodation. All are as accessable to Expo as Nagoya and you might avoid the worse of the rush.
BTW we're having a BBQ on Monday you can come of you want, we live in Toyota.
PS In an absolute pinch PM me we have a spare room. |

Fair enough.... But I think we're pretty much committed now. As for accomodations, I managed to ask a favour of a friend living about an hour out of Nagoya... So we do at least have a place to crash. Never did find anything in or near Nagoya in the way of a hotel though.
Otherwise, as far as expo goes... This will be our second trip. The first time was crowded as well, but we managed. We plan on staying the whole day -- from opening time to closing time.... And as long as the lineup isn't too long in front of the Cuban pavillion (so I can buy a nice box of cigars) I'll be happy.
Last time we went, we did really well. All we had to do was stay away from the Russian, American, Canadian (and other) popular pavilions. Some of the countries that Japanese people don't really give a crap about because they are not Japanese tourist destinations (or in the news every week) were almost abandoned (relatively speaking) but they were still very interesting. We specifically avoided expo during summer holidays and Obon, but now that most kids are back in school, we hope it'll be at least a BIT better.
So, we'll see to what degree our strategy will pay off. I'll post a report up on Tuesday to let everyone know how it went.
Wish us luck!
P.S. Thanks for the BBQ invite.... I'd go if we were down there for more than just 1 day... |

Here I go, quoting myself. Pretentious bugger, aren't I?
Anyway, this is to avoid hijacking another thread, so sweetsee -- this one's mainly for you.
Expo was fantastic. It was the second time we went, the first was in the Spring. It was MUCH less busy back then, but yet, we still managed to have a helluva time on holiday Monday, even though it was busting-at-the-seams-full of people.
The longest wait we had all day was getting into the darn event. We parked at one of the designated parking lots at about 10:15 a.m. and there was TONS of free parking spaces..... Cost us 2500 to park the car, but both my wife and could take the shuttle bus to the front gates and back (included in the price). The wait to get into the entrance was almost exactly one hour. When we got close enough to see the metal detectors, I veered off to the ticket counter to buy tickets, which was remarkably easy. Seems that 99% of the people waiting to get in already had theirs so there was absolutely no lineup for that.... Amazing! We were in the gates and wondering about by 11:30 a.m. I proceeded to the nearest UFJ ATM machine for some cash -- once again, almost no lineup. 2 minutes, tops.
As I expected, all the popular pavilions (Japanese corporate, and all the cool countries like U.S., Canada, Oz, Russia, etc) had insane lineups.... Couldn't be bothered. Besides, I already know all about those countries.... I was much more curious about the non-cool countries where there was NO lineup whatsoever.... We're talking, Yemen, Uzbekistan, many African countries, Laos, Cambodia, etc... In the end we made it into some of the "cool countries' pavilions" -- Russia, Australia, Korea, China.... But that was just before the park closed and most people were already heading out...
Summary:
In 2 days of visiting Expo, we
- Saw 96 countries (in 48 pavilions),
- Purchased: Cuban cigars, African percussion instruments, Indian textiles and tea, Yemenese jewelry, Sri Lankan sarong (for me -- not my wife... heh...), Iranian spices, Indian shawl for my wife, and many other little things....
- Ate and drank: FANTASTIC Czech food prepared by TV celebrity chefs who have their own cooking shows in their home country, complete with Czech beer and wine (yes, I'm culturally biased), Sri Lankan mango ice cream, Laotian beer and rice dish, Vietnamese Chicken/rice noodle soup and vegetable rolls, El Salvadorian empanadas and some other random samplings of Latin American dishes, Thai coconut milk, and a few other assorted food/drink items...
- Waited a total of: 1.5hrs in lineups (roughly).
- Met many cool people from different countries.... Got to practice my French and Spanish in more countries than you could shake a stick at.... (Especially French-speaking Africa)
- Saw 1 3D movie
- got pi$$ed off on 2 occasions (at the morons running a pavilion)
- had my wife's purse lost and recovered by security (devoid of all cash, of course) but ccards and everything else intact
- Spent a total of about 100,000 yen including transportation, tickets and purchases....
- Had 100% good time and would totally do it again sometime.
Maybe at some point I can point to a link or include an excerpt from my blog where I talk about Expo at length and in much more detail....
Cheers,

Glad you had a good time!
I went down last weekend, stayed with a mate in Ogaki, just outside Nagoya. Took four hours in total from Ogaki until we actually got inside the place, then an insane two hour wait to get back on the subway at 9pm when it closed.
Like you I didn't want to queue for hours, so went to all the places with short lineups or none whatsoever, and I had a damn good, though very tiring time.
All my friends in Nagano were slating it, (even those who didn't go!) but I found it very interesting. Not something you can do everyday.
