Hi everyone,
I've stamped and sealed it - I'll be coming to Buenos Aires November 17 for who knows how long. No erasies. I've never been to Argentina and don't know a single person there but I am going on a good feeling and a pile of recommendations ... and I am really excited!!! I want to thank all the regular posters on this site - it made it a lot easier for me to decide to go to Bs.As. because I knew I could access lots of how-to info on this site.
On to my question:
I am getting in to the airport in the middle of the night with two bags and don't feel like I should be going too far. Is there a safe, well-reputed type place near the airport that anyone could recommend?
As well, I will be starting the EBC course on November 21 and will need to stay somewhat close to the school; could any EBC alumni recommend a hostel or some place that would be convenient and not too expensive?
Thanks guys!!! |

Hola Chaquita, good decision, you will love it...BA is great.
Lets check what the others have to say, but I dont suggest you staying at the Airport Area, even if you are arriving by night.....there is only one hotel at the airport and there arent hotels nearby
at night it will take you only 25 minutes to get downtown....so I think its better to just take a REMIS (private taxi) at the Airport....I think the rate is U$S 20.
Regarding where to stay....lets see if the others can give you more tips.

chaquitamaria,
First things first, I second Redley's wellcome! you'll have a blast in BA, and you can take that to the bank!.
No hotels around the airport so, you have no options but to take a private car (Remise) form the airport to downtown. Usually you can hire them once you clear customs and go thru the sliding doors you'll find several counters rent-a-car and remise service. If you decide to hire at the airport I will recomend Manuel Tienda Leon, price is around USD 20. They are a reliable company and a very respected one.
Then comes your second problem where to stay for one night, that's the difficult part since most of the hotels will charge you a lot for one night, and many of them will not even accept you for the night. So my advice to you, check before hand, and make sure you have a place to stay before take off, may be some of the guys can help you or the people at the place where you're taking the course may give you some advice.
Well have a safe trip, and if you have any more questions keep on writing!
Cheers

I am not in BA, still in the states. But having been there with my husband several times, I would be concerned for your safety as a female traveling alone. Take the advice of Redley and Gauchito with the Remis. Make sure that you do not take any old cab trying to save money as safety is a concern. I am envious and hopefully will be behind you but not for a couple of more years Redley, having lived in California my whole life and hung around surfers, I love your new pic! Is it Mar De Plata?

holly.....i loveeeeeeee California? Are you there right now? (come on make me envious!). I spent some months in Point Dume (Pepperdine) and in San Francisco and had a great time. Will go back some day...when I am able to collect the virtual dollars (LOL) I saved during the convertibility illusion. (believing was never so gratifying).
My picture isnt in Mar del Plata. Actually its in Buzios, 2 hrs. away from Rio de Janerio (Brazil). Beautiful place if you like paradise beaches. We have a new Brazilian Airline that offer round trip tickets from Buenos Aires to Rio for u$s 200. Its actually cheaper to take a Plane to Sao Paulo, Rio or Florianopolis than visiting Tucuman, Salta, Jujuy or Bariloche. (checked last week turist fares with aerolineas argentinas to these argentine states and all of them were above u$s 200).
Try to visit Brazil if you can, lots of fun, nice weather, beaches...excellent holiday spot.

Hey Redley! I am not in California now but my husband is there this week. We moved to Kansas City in January for my husbands job but still own our home in California as well about a half an hour from the surf capital of Huntington Beach/Dana Point area.
As far as visiting Brazil, I found out yesterday that during my studies I will need to study a year of Brazilian Portugese to earn my spanish degree. I also have decided to double major in Spanish and Latin American Studies. So, maybe someday I end up visiting Brazil too.
On an employment topic, I found out yesterday as well that the University I will be attending has already built many relationships with Latin countries and have numerous programs in place for teacher internships and exchange programs. Because of that and my marriage to a porteno giving me the ability to get legitimate residiency/work papers in Argentina, I should do very well in the area of employment. Thanks for your advice Redley! Surf On!!!! |

REDLEY - Whats this new airline!?!?
Holly - Stay in a hostel! I was in great one the first few nights I was here, and it couldnt have provided me with a better intro. to the city. Being the only American, I met alot of really cool people from all over the world, and the staff was amazing -I was up drinking with them on my first night until 630 am! Also, I got a private room w/ a bathroom, and it was about $20 USD...perhaps a splurge, but well worth it the first night when you are exhausted and need a queen size bed to lay out on. At risk of sounding like an advertisement, Ill stop - but the point is, take a cab into the city, lock your bags up, meet some great people, and enjoy yourself. |

Sorry, the Brazilean Airline is "GOL" www.voegol.com.br
Now they have daily flights to FLORIANOPOLIS (just 1.40 hs away flight time)
If you buy in advance, you can get round trip tickets for around u$s 200, try to find TARIFA U (WEB).

Viva Barca -
It is in fact I - Maria - who needed the advice about the place to stay; thanks for the advice. May I ask which hostel you stayed at? Was it close to the EBC building? (you did EBC, right?)

Yeh...I wasnt going to say the name of the place in my previous post, because I didnt want to appear even more like a paid spokesman than I already did...but this really was a legit place. Thats my disclaimer. Anyway, its called Chill Houseand its in Palermo Viejo. I think its at www.chillhouse.com.ar. Palermo Viejo is a bit away from downtown, but its a nice area to explore and a fair amount of buses run through it (but not really any subway stops). Very sort of BoHo...I think youll like it alot.
Thats great that you booked your flight - now the hard part is playing the waiting game! I booked my flight in April and then had to slave away in an office for the following 4 months...argh!

Thanks for the info, Viva Barca. I understand what you mean about the waiting game. I like my job and everything but it's hard not to think about travel and beaches and things not that I know I'm on my way in only a month ...
And, may I ask, is that David Hasselhoff or a look alike in your photo? It looks like the Hoff, but the legs seems a little too spindley.
