Hello all. I just finished my CELTA course. I have three years experience with teaching EFL, including one year in Oman and one year in the Emirates. I was also in Abu Dhabi working a temporary summer position while the Emirates passed new laws allowing workers to change employment without being banned. I have an MS in Education. Can you lead me in the right direction to find any employers that might presently be looking for teachers, and also if you know, how does this new law affect EFL Instructors. If we quit a position, can we look for other work in the Emirates without being subject to the 6-month ban. Thank you for your replies. Public and PM responses welcome. |

Are you looking to get into higher ed. EFL jobs like at the university level? UAEU is starting to only consider MA in TESOL/Applied Linguistics for their first year programs (IEP).
ZU and UAEU have a 1 year ban- i.e. if you're at UAEU and want to go to ZU after your contract finishes you have to wait 1 year. However, teachers have quit UAEU (in June) and gone to HCT (in September).
For EFL there doesn't appear to be a 6-month ban. It depends on the agreements between the universities and colleges and if they are national and private.
Right now is a good time to start job hunting in UAE- they are starting to recruit for 2006-2007 academic year.
If you're looking to get a job asap- I think HCT might be the place to start. Maybe even Abu Dhabi University. And if you're in country maybe UAEU. Some teachers are leaving in January.
The winter semester tends to be a down period in the universities- very few new students enter a program then. |

Try all the usual suspects menace2... (though I would only approach Abu Dhabi U in total desperation). I know that UAEU does not need any teachers, but HCT always starts the years short because of their 'odd' interviewing system. Are you in the country?
We really won't know the effect of the new law until we see what the employers actually 'do.'
