My friend has a dodgy job in a private language school in Shenzhen.

His bo ss, either pondering the monthly income or the health of his two laowai, comes to a compromise

The two are packed off for a bloodtest and are informed by a sad boss that both have syphylis and thus cannot teach in his high class joint.

The two socially undesirables take another bloodtest from another hospital and take the results to the boss who is not impressed

This hospital is no good, test is no good!

Another reason to take a holiday till this craze dies down

Peter, if the above is true, you could do many people a favor by having one of the principals (so that it is not second-hand info.) in the matter post here to Dave's and other forums. The name of the school and boss would be helpful. I think the Jobs Experience sections would be the place.

That would be bordering on illegally divulging sensitive information of a third person, wouldn't it?
Let me assure you, kimo, you have every reason to believe Peter's account as he has been in Shenzhen for 5 years! I spent three years there too! I can safely say dodginess is a very common quality of schools there!
Besides, I am sure the two expats were working without a work visa. Who would benefit from this case being exposed in full detail?
It serves very well as a reminder that most employers in China are heartless and unscrupulous sharks.
And many backpackers are just as naive as they are incompetent as teachers!

So, Roger, what are you saying? Teachers beware? You might be right about the legal issues. I don't know. You might be right that the two are backpackers. I don't know. And since I don't know and would like to because I am considering Shenzhen someday, I asked if Peter could have one of the two write his/her own story.

Peter, what's the point of posting your message if you don't mention the name of the school? That way you could warn other teachers who were thinking of accepting a job there. Are you trying to say things like this happen at any private school in Shenzhen?

My friend is an illegal teacher. He is on his 7th business visa and makes a meagre living, even in SZ.

I do not know the school's name.

I put out this post as an example of another weird story.

Getting fired when there are no customers is normal anywhere; it was just such a strange way of doing so.

Once SARS is history plus 6 months we are back to variable normal

If you work in China, in a big city, you must expect idiotic behaviour from businessmen turned principals

It's the boss who's got the syph.........the third stage of this affliction causes madness.

It was a way to fire surplus staff without loosing face; his business is going down the gurgler
