Dear Teacher,

You need some sort of reward system...like a token economy with prize cards, points, stars, etc. Ideally, there will be a way to encourage students individually and as a group.

There should be no need to yell. As a teacher, you face the same problems as other teachers have faced (for uncountable years). The question is, how will you deal with the problem?

Generally, you don't have to keep the kids in Taiwan entertained...just keep them busy! If they are busy doing something reasonably worthwhile, your job will be much, much easier.

Best wishes,

Taylor

Yeah, I used to loose my temper at the kids sometimes. As you know it doesn't solve to problem. While I agree that reward systems have their place, a reward system alone is not going to help you. After all they are still kids and they will still misbehave.

When you get angry, give a short quick 'hey', 'stop' or 'enough'. Then say nothing, just stare at them. You can even fold your arms across your chest. They hate the silence. Everybody will probably sit down and be quiet. You still remain in control and have not yelled at them. This will give you a few seconds to collect yourself also.

I sympathize with you. I have taught 4-7 year olds for a long time. It can get very difficult, especially with the language barrier. Hang in there.

Sounds like you don't like teaching kids. Many people feel the same way. Try teaching adults instead.
God luck!

Yep, I can relate to this! I have a rather 'difficult' class and have yelled at them before! Their last teacher had same problem. I agree, adults can be a lot better!

Yeh, I agree. Personally a quick bodyblow to the chest is the way to go.

Yup, it will freak them out and shut them up.....then argue with yourself in a corner, then be normal....works like a charm!

go with a school with smaller class sizes - they aer usually so intimidated that they dont say 'booo'.
Where i worked for a short time the kids were like robots - tired as and I had to try and keep them awake by making them laugh. Never had one out of line the entire time.
My girlfriend works at the same school and she says the same thing. Maybes it just the small class sizes that keep them well behaved?

I had the same good experience, I agree. A handout is cool but they do stare too much at them and CLAM UP!
