I've started to send out letters looking for a university teaching position for this fall. I've found a website that appears to list many, if not all, of the universities in Mexico (www.findaschool.org), but it only gives you the website connection; there's no information about the quality of the school, the treatment of teachers, etc.
I would enjoy living somewhere in the State of Michoacan. The only school I've found there is the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolas de Hidalgo in Morelia. If anyone has any information about this school or any others in Michoacan, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

I feel like a relentless cheerleader for the Tec. But I can assure you this is purely informative: ITESM campus Morelia. It's 2 years old, I intereviewed there last spring. Interesting place, growing fast, lots of room for a competent, motivated teacher. Nice city, too. Too bad the campus is out in the hills 20 minutes from town. Anyway, that's an alternative to the option you mentioned. |

Hi M@tt,
Thanks for the tip. I hope I can find the name/e-mail of the appropriate person to contact on the ITESM-Morelia website. Do you remember the name of the person who interviewed you last year?

Hi,
No, I don't remember offhand and I think it's written on a paper buried in a pile of papers buried in a pile of boxes (I'm moving right now). I do remember it was an American woman, very friendly. Things could easily have changed by now, but you should go on the Morelia website and look for the secretary's or the director's number, call the campus, and just ask for the English coordinator (they may ask you if you want prepa or profesional, but at the time I think there was one person overseeing both sides of the campus). Good luck! |

The ITESM has just changed and standardized the websites for each campus , making it harder than ever to find a useful name/e-mail, but I'll see what I can do. Calling sounds like a good idea, now that long-distance rates to Mexico from where I am are now down to 20 cents a minute.
Thanks for your help - good luck with your move! |

M@tt,
I sent an e-mail to the Administradora Academica at the ITESM-Morelia, and she kindly sent it on to the Directora de Idiomas for me. I wonder if I'll hear from the latter...
Thanks again for your help.

m@tt - So, did you take a job at Tec or not? I suppose I could read your other posts to find out, but I am too busy chasing my hyperactive pre-Tec students around the colegio. Tec tends to give some people bad vibes. Any thoughts on this?

Hi M@tt,
I finally got the name and e-mail of the current Directora de Idiomas at the ITESM-Morelia, and we've written back and forth a few times. She's been very helpful and encouraging, but she has let me know that she only has part-time positions to offer. Was that the case when you interviewed there? She's also told me that no FM-3's could be issued for the coming Fall semester; I don't know what the situation is for January 2006, which is when I would start there, if I'm hired. That has me rather concerned. Anyway, I do want to thank you for suggesting that I contact them. |

Someone who worked for me worked at the Morelia campus, and was never given fulltime status. She found it to be a difficult work environment all around. |

Moonraven - Could you give me a few hints about the nature of the "difficult work environment" at the ITESM-Morelia that you mention in your post? Was it the students, the other teachers, the administration, the curriculum, work conditions?
Mil gracias. |

Moonraven - I'll keep that in mind when I go to Morelia for an interview. |

First let me say that Morelia is great city and the state of Michoacan one of the most scenic in the republic, offering many diversions.
Been at this campus for about 2 1/2 years now as a "planta Monterrey" professor in the Department of Languages. This a TEC term designating a full-time tenured position. There are various designations as at most universities in most any country.
Before that I taught at another TEC campus (Campus Laguna in Torreon) for two years on a year-to-year contract. And...I can say that each campus is different though many procedures, goals, objectives, etc. are standardized system-wide.
So near 5 years in the TEC (ITESM) system and for the most part quite happy with the experience. No real plans to move on, though recently dealing with an endlessly recurring bout of wanderlust and checking into Vietnam or Cambodia. But I think mostly for fun and expect this craziness will pass.
Besides I've done my time in Asia...a couple of years in Japan, a couple in Korea, one in China and a year of travelling throughout the entire area as well as Europe and the US.
These days quite content in the mountains outside of Morelia. Yes, the campus is about 20 minutes outside of the city proper but that is a blessing, not a curse. And there are places to live close to campus. I live two-minutes from my office on-campus and am surrounded by pine trees, wildflowers, and not much else except the small village down the road, Jesus del Monte. I get into Morelia proper about once a week or so to stock up on groceries, etc. though most things are available in the village.
The point of this mail is mostly to say hello to those on this board as this is my first post and to offer what help I can, in regards to anyone seriously looking for work at this campus or another of the thirty- something TEC campuses.
Send an email and I am more than willing to share what I have learned over the past 4 1/2 years with ITESM.
Pablo

I interviewed at Hidalgo (CU) but they were only offering part-time hours so I didn't take it. They have recently had a boom in the size of the language department and were actively hiring teachers at that point. Being as the semester has already begun I think it would be very difficult to find a position there. Try going to CADI (on the campus) it is a language lab and you will likely find some private lessons or volunteer opportunities there. I volunteered in the office and was given free use of the lab (with instruction in something like 6 languages).
All in all I was very impressed with the school and the level of education in the languages department. |
