Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had transfered money here from the UK. I'm currently in Shanghai and will need to transfere some money over in the next couple of weeks.
Is it possible to do it through a bank? Has anyone taken out money on a master or visa card?
thanks |

Most ATMs allow you to withdraw cash from a foreign credit card. I do it often. Go to any ATM that has the CIRRUS, MAESTRO or VISA PLUS sign, and it should not be a problem.
I have found that sometimes the ATMs from Bank of China don't allow me to do it, but most other ATMs do.
You receive RMB, and the transaction will appear in your next statement, with the RMB amount and GBP amount, plus the transaction fee. I've never found any errors with this process - I've done it for 5 years.
Getting money sent INTO China is relatively easy. Unfortunately, getting money OUT is much more annoying. You may want to look into how you will pay your monthly credit card bill while you are here, if you use it. I actually get my statement sent to me here in Shanghai - arrives same date every month. Organising to send money back to the UK to pay it off is a bit more complex - but it can be done. |
