Besides high school or university jobs, you will have to look long and hard to find a conversation school that pays that much. Sadly, yes, the market baseline salary has not changed in many years. What are your qualifications?

From April's ohayosensei.com, here are all the jobs advertised that fall close to that figure.

at different grades, yard duty and bus monitor. Nerima-ku, Tokyo

ASSISTANT LANGUAGE TEACHER (ALT).
Full-time. 300,000yen/month. Team teach English as an Assistant
Language Teacher (ALT) at three public junior high schools, teach
English in residential programs conducted through the language

2-day travel English courses, one-week summer workshop for teachers
of English, and 3-day courses for high school students (short
camp-type events, large groups), perform administrative duties, and
develop materials. Odawara, Kanagawa

ENGLISH CONVERSATION TEACHERS.
Full- (300,000yen/month, national/school holidays and completion
bonus) and part-time (3000yen/hour). Teach at cultural school. Native
speaker required. Teaching experience preferred.

classes/day, 3500yen/hour). Teach children aged 1-6. Proper visa,
native English speaker, BA and experience teaching ESL/EFL required.
TESL certification preferred. Meguro, Tokyo

ENGLISH TEACHER.

classes/week. 3,600,000yen/year. Organize and run English program for

The Golden Age of Japan is over (and has been for a while now)... Even though the streets aren't paved with gold, 250,000 will still earn you a respectable living.... If you want to go where the real money is, consider investing in an MA (unless you already have one) and a BEd, and move to Saudi Arabia or U.A.E. Seems to be the boom industry now, anyway.

It's a case of supply & demand.... There seem to be about a dozen people lining up for each job, even though it's only an Eikawa that pays the standard minimum 250,000.... At the same time, schools are having a tough time finding appropriate, qualified staff to fill vacancies.... But due to the economy, you can be guaranteed they won't be offering you more any time soon.

Good luck though.... If you can catch the gravy train... Fantastic! But if you're coming here expecting to snag that 350+ job.... Good chance you'll go home disappointed.

JD

P.S. Yes. It is a commonly known fact that English teacher salaries have remained virtually unchanged in the last 15 years... It is also a fact that English teachers still make a lot more than many Japanese people. Full-time Japanese staff at my school make 160,000 and do a lot more work (paperwork, interaction with clients and parents and daily maint. stuff that requires fluency in Japanese)....
