I hope so but I won't hold my breath - by the way our dispute has been fired up a bit with this
http://education.guardian.co.uk/higher/news/story/0,,1726758,00.html
We are now on a work to rule - when the scripts come in I'm to do all the marking but not put the mark on, do no exam invigilation, do no quality control and stick to18 hours of contact a week. I might be able to prepare some lessons
You watching the rugby tomorrow? Last ever game at Lansdowne Rd - the oldest rugby ground - at last we've got a team again! |

More likely to have the opposite effect, at least in the short run: Some schools don't meet the minimum - and minimal -required standards so demand for EFL teachers falls; other schools use the increased expense of paying for proper certification as an excuse to keep down teacher's wages.
In the long run, the improvement in overall standards could lead to an improved reputation of UK EFL schools, increased student numbers and thus a higher demand for good teachers. In any case it would be better to have fewer, but better, schools with higher standards than the current situation.
ps Good luck with the dispute RH. |

Oh yes. In an Irish pub!!There is no Scottish pub here in Istanbul.(Why are there Irish pubs everywhere but no Scottish pubs? Do we Scots not drink enough?) actually one of the few times I get homesick is during the Rugby. How I wish I had been at murrayfield 2 weeks ago. |

back to the cost of accreditation...perhaps it is part of the greater golabalisation effect but isn't it a little strange for our British schools to be paying in Dollars?
More to the point it is back to the old story of controlling immigration loopholes and dodgy practice. The end result should be a better regulated EFL school. For many of those Eflers intending to set up a school it will not be so easy, not that it ever was, but recruitment abroad would be affected as potential students would find it difficult to access a visa without the school being officially accredited, so many of these "summer camps" would get it in the neck. Where will eflers work on return for the summer? Well the only schools that would be operating, in any real sense of the wowrd, would be the big ones...let's not even think about how much the pay would be affected....for summer school.
FT workers might find that the dearth of cheaper schools and "colleges" causes a growth in the established schools, which will in turn seek more teachers and will expect to retain their good ones while attempting to poach the better ones from other schools. IT JUST MIGHT BECOME A RECOGNISED PROFESSION.... then we can talk about wages. |

hey Russell,
Are you full-time at a University?
How did you get into it, what's your story? I'd be interested to know.
I do occassional temporary EAP contracts for a London Uni. I'm happy with that at the moment, as I'm still studying for my Masters. Will prob. do summer Pre-sessional work again this year, hopefully.
Are you at London Metropolitan? I heard they prefer Masters which contain Observations? That true?
DMB,
I see from the Turkey forum you're one of their main posters. I was in Istanbul for 5 years. 2 at IH and 3 at ITU. ITU was wonderful. The working conditions were superb (I was doing a 3 day teaching week in my last year, for full-time wages) Mind you being a state Uni, the full-time wages weren't that great! Still, the best and most enjoyable teaching experience I've had and great students too. |

Hi Londonlover, I'm sure you'll be saddened to hear that IH is no more. EF bought it over. ITU is still going strong though-albeit as disorganised as ever(actually going out to the Maslak campus for dinner tonight)
You mentioned Metropolitan uni. Did you know that they are the money behind Oxford House, which is aiming to knock ET off the number one spot? |

Yeah,
know all about IH taken over by EF. I was in the Bul til last year.
So how are Oxford House doing in their attempt to overtake miss Molly's ET? I thought ET had loads of branches.
Incidentally, I had a recent interview offer from Oxford House. They said I could choose either London or Istanbul and it was 30 hours minimum (!)
don't like that minimum bit.
Blimey, Ive only got one response to that:
You're avin a larf, aintcha? |

Yeah I started out doing Summer EAP 5 years ago and then got taken on full time when the Widening Participation idea kicked in - The important thing for an EFL/EAP person is to have an extra skill as far as things seem to be going. So dyslexia certs, numeracy, information studies or a specialism in the depatment looking for a tutor is always a plus. |

I don't see salaries going up for a long time. If anything, I expect them to go down over the next decade. |

Pigs have wings. It'll just be an opportunity for fewer schools to rake in higher profits. More paperwork for little gain. Where indeed will the unemployed summer teflers go? |
