hi everyone...
i'm completely new to this forum and i just had a few questions.
i'm just wrapping up my undergrad from the university of toronto and would like to pursue a career in medicine afterwards. i would like to spend my upcoming summer months (may-august) in korea teaching english.
having done some research it looks like most schools require a minimum 1 year contract. i have read some posting on this forum saying that six-month contracts are available (but are rare especially in korea). are there contracts that last only for 4 months? or could i go without signing a contract?
in addition, i am not nor do i intend to become certified in tefl/tesol or celta.
any suggestions?
thanks! |

You can not actually teach or work in Korea unless you have a university degree as immigration requires it for your visa. The visa is for one year so most schools will offer a one year contract.
I dont know the specifics of working in Korea but if you go without a contract that means entering the country on a tourist visa and then trying to look for work in country. In Japan where I am at least, it is officially illegal to look for work, or actually work on a tourist visa.
Check the Korea forum about getting jobs there with no visa, but I think a 4 month stint will be a pipe dream IMO. |

I think I remember seing something about summer camp type jobs in Korea, China does it too. You won't save much in China, but it would be an experience anyways.
Check the Korea forum and Korea jobs. |

You'll find China is awash with positions for Summer Camps in July-August.
Usually accommodation and basic meals are included, but airfares understandably aren't. The kids only want to attend for the social life, the teachers because they need the cash, the school owners because they want the cash.
The parents just want their little emperor off their property.
So, as you can imagine, hardly a great introduction to teaching.
But if you can entertain petulant, lazy 15 year olds, you can enjoy China briefly, maybe even recouping your airfare.
And no, I haven't done one of these and never will. |

I did a summer camp in China a few years ago. It was through the US-China Educational Exchange, based in New York. They paid for room and board, plus a salary that was enough to fund short trips and souvenirs (I was able to pay $20 for a burrito in Hong Kong after I left China!), but not airfare, so overall I lost money.
The students were junior-high through adult--including some of those petulant 15-year-olds! I would not repeat the experience, but it was a nice summer trip when I was in grad school.
