So, I'm thinking about making a *ahem* holiday run to Syria sometime in the future. Does anybody know the visa requirement for Americans? Is there a consulate here in Istanbul? |

Word to the Wise
The short answer Yes to both. You should go in and see them in person, it takes some time. A cheap way to get there is via Gaziantepe. You can catch a bus to Applo(?) and from there to Şam. |

coffeespoonman, you should definitely visit Syria. Great place.
I think the visa is about $100 for us yanks. I haven't been in a while, though, so I'll confirm that with a friend who went recently.
The consulate is on the European side, in Macka. I've been out of Istanbul for a while now, so I don't remember much about getting there. I dug this address up on the web:
Consulate General of SYRIAN ARAB REPUBLIC
Address : Macka Caddesi Ralli Apt. 59/3 Tesvikiye Istanbul
Phone : (212) 232 67 21 , 232 71 10
Fax : (212) 230 22 15

Hey, thanks. Has anyone done the trip by train? www.seat61.com says it's a great trip, and I'm something of a train enthusiast... Great places to go in Syria? I've heard Latakia's awesome. How's Damascus? Any place I shouldn't miss? Thanks! |
