eslteacher_1973's "heads up on ET" post has been cut for obvious reasons, but something he said is a little confusing for me.

He said that he lived in ET housing and there was a curfew. Is this right? Is this normal for all school assisted housing? Why don't the teacher's have a key for the front door? What times are the curfews? If you don't make it back in time, are you stuck on the street?

Maybe someone could give me a better idea of what school housing is like in Turkey.

I think he was talking about the lojman, which is like a hostel, and they just don't have the guard posted at the door all night. I don't think this is really permanent housing, just a place to use til you find your own.

I think many schools now don't have housing. (Everyone, am I right?) The housing I have heard of is an apartment/flat with a teacher to each bedroom.

While working for the English Centre I stayed in one of their flats with two other teachers. No guard, no curfew, of course. It wasn't The Ritz but is was solid, safe and warm. How "homey" it was was up to us.

So, did you have any control over who you lived with? Or did they just send you the last guy off the plane?

At my last school, one guy packed up all his belongings and his roomie's laptop on his way out....

Is the guard to stop the teachers doing a runner because of the pay and lack of conditions or to stop the teachers wrecking the place?

Teachers did move around a bit. They made friends at the school and as rooms opened up they moved in with those friends.

The English Centre (This was a few years back so I am not sure how they are now)was choosy over who they hired so there weren't many odd balls when I worked there. Therefore getting along with roomates wasn't a burden.

That was one school. Perhaps someone else can comment on other schools. There are many dershanes in Istanbul. Why is it only ET gets discussed?

Why does British English never get ripped apart? It certainly deserves to be.

Poor old British English started off at the low end of the market and has never ceased to disappoint.

It attracts the lowest of the low and perhaps they do not get ripped off because there is so little to rip off.

last i heard, the English Centre's housing was for only 4 months. I don't know if that's true or not.

Re ET housing, it is for 3 months, and yes you are right that it is only to allow teachers to get on their feet and get into their own places. They tend to want to to that, anyway. I certainly would.

The security guard is also the cleaner and general factotum. the curfew is for the protection of the people who live in the lojman and it is not unreasonable-- 2 am during the week and 4 am on Fri Sat. The same man then gets up to let people out at 7 or 8 am. The lojman is in Taksim, so it is better to have the security.

For factotum read:

dogsbody

I wonder if he is on hourly pay and if he gets social security and sick pay as is the law here.
