Hi, My name is Mike.
I have been reading the Argentina TEFL Job forum for a while and have recently found a place to do my TEFL certification and volunteer. I would like to explain to people that a TEFL and the TOEFL are different too.
I saw that a poster thought they were the same thing. I have trouble believing however that this poster was serious about paying for a TEFL certification. You should know what you are getting into before you throw down 1 or 2 thousand bucks for a certificate you don't 100% need to teach.
I was pretty shakey on the whole thing too, TEFL/celta/toefl - whatever.
Anyway, I called a few of the places in Buenos Aires (where I am staying in Recoletta) and visited them. Well, actually I tried to visit all of them but only one place was welcoming enough to let me in right away.
The only place that let me in was TEFLocal Buenos Aires, in fact, I got to sit down and watch other trainees do what they do for a bit and then chat with them, and the instructors afterwards. I was really touched by what they do for the local and international communities. People are from all over, England, Argentina, Bermuda, and the US.
I see now that experience is the key and a positive learning environment is really key.
Also, The TEFLocal course provider is located in Recoleta next the EU embassy and many parks - I like that. I would suggest stopping by all the places and meeting the trainers before just reading this chat board and going, "oh I like what these people say!" C'mon - you may as well sign up for a TOEFL certificate (not for native English speakers if you base your opinions completely on what other people think.
Anyway, if anyone is interested, I know of a great party this weekend that benefits local English teahers and students, http://teachingargentina.com Hope to see you there!
