I say just give a tip. Sometimes people think its a little wierd (the barber i went to the other day, for example), but they always appreciate it, and i think I'm already gaining enough from their economy that i can afford to give a tip.

from what an Argentine told me, you only tip if you actually like the service. It's not like in the states where you HAVE to tip at least 10% even if the service was complete shit, and at least twice that if it was fine. So, I say it is up to you. I would definitly tip at places that you frequent, but you won't get blacklisted if you don't.

You really should always tip, even a small amount, from 5% up is appreciated. Waitresses earn around 2-3 pesos an hour. Most of their living is made in tips. If the service is bad i'll leave 5%, if it's good up to 15%. If the service is deliberately bad (and it happens sometimes-there are a lot of people with 'attitude' here) then i'll leave at least 20%. It really, really pisses these people off to know that you're a better person than them. It's like a slap in the face to them. An expensive slap, i'd agree, but a slap that gives me a sense of superiority which is nice...!! Read "The Thought Gang" by Tibor Fischer for a great description of the extra large tip-leaving process...

I think we Anglophones should tip 10-15% for good service. For the meals that I order, that usually ends up being just a peso or two anyway.

Maybe a lot of Argentines tip less, but since we're here earning $AR20.00/hr just because our native language is English, I think we can spread the wealth around a bit to the waitresses who earn $AR2.00/hr.

Wow are you earning $20 per hour? Where are you working? Thats good money for Quilmes. I thought it would have been lower out in the province. I wish I was earing that!! And of course you can only earn it if you are working it so thats a different story. It seems from the people I've been speaking to that the hours are starting to dwindle to nothing already and it isn't even November yet. When started I had 24 hours now it's down to 12 hours which will only just support me!! We are not all rolling in the money

I'm not rolling in money either. I just think if you go out to a restaurant, you are morally obligated to factor the tip into your "budget". If the service is terrible, then by all means, don't tip. But if you get good service, I think you should give the waiter his due. If someone cannot afford to tip, he probably shouldn't be eating out in the first place.
