It seems that UK citizens have a big advantage in the fact that they can work for the British Council. Is there a US equivalent?

As far as I'm aware, there is no American equivalent of the British Council, although in certain countries, our US embassy does have its hand in promoting various English language programs and teaching fellowships.

Here's one concrete example from Russia:

Personally, I try to avoid any contact with American Embassy officials unless it's absolutely necessary, since many or most of these officials are doing more than just providing consular services [e.g. spying].
