One thing I so dearly miss since moving back to Japan
is the Pittsburgh Steelers. Back in the States I could
watch them every week. Now, I know that's wishful
thinking, but other than NHK BS1, are there any other
channels that cover NFL games? If I get a satellite dish,
will I be able to watch a little more football?
This is coming from a Japanese guy (although I did spend
half my life in the States), I just can't imagine how some
of you Americans out there can be living overseas during
football season. it's got to be painful. I already gave up on
March Madness, I doubt I'll have any chance of watching that. |

If you get a dish you'll be able to watch a LOT of football.
Between BS1, Gaora and G+, you should have busy week trying to catch up to it all...
As for NCAA? No way. Not unless you have a REALLY close friend back in the U.S. My friend has his mother tape the whole tournament, and he stays away from the news, Internet, etc for a month and then when he gets em by mail he watches it back-to-back pretty much.
Hope that helps.

thank you for the info.
Not that I can afford to have a dish
on a first year salary, but maybe in
a few years.
goodbye college hoops, and the
office pool I never got to participate in. |

Gaora covers the most games. The cool thing about Gaora is that the games are delayed telecast so if your teams lost, you know not to watch the game.
If you can afford a dish, find a sports bar! |

| Anybody know of sports bars likely to show (US) college sports in the Greater Tokyo area? I'm thinking of how I will watch bowl games, the biggest b-ball matchups, etc. Are there places that might be persuaded if I brought a posse of buying customers? |

That is a tough question! Finding sports bars that show the NFL was hard enough. You might want to try Out Back Steak House. The manager of the Out Back where I live tapes NFL games and brings the tape in for his American customers. I have seen college games before in Japan not too often though. Maybe the manager has a dish and then could tape them for you. |

The problem is, what do they show on satellite? If it isn't on the sports channels (ESPN, Gaora, G+) and if it isn't on NHK (BS), and if it the sports bar doesn't have a monster C-band dish, you can promise to pack the place with every foreigner in town, but they'll have to acquire the games the same way as the rest of us. And many times that means having a friend or family member back home willing to record stuff and send it.
As an aside, for what it's worth, last year I had my parents record the Grey Cup (Canadian Football's equivalent of the Superbowl) and send it by courier to me. We gathered up all the Canadians we could and had a heckuva time! It was about a 3-day delay though and the shipping cost was obscene.
I do believe I'll be doing it again this year though. |

| Having someone send taped videos would be expensive! I so seldom watch football, I am usually happy to see any game. |

| As a Texas fan/alum, I'm getting increasingly excited about this year's Rose Bowl. What about high-profile games? I'm sure it's not hard to watch the Super Bowl in Japan. What about the college National Championship? |

| I wonder who selects the games that Goara shows! Last week, they showed two of the worst teams in the NFL. I feel for those people who are a fan of one team, because just seeing a good game is a rarity. I don't cheer for any one time, I just like to watch good offensive games! |

Speaking of sports bars,
I'll be moving to Sendagi, in Bunkyo-ku this weekend,
and I was wondering if any of you know of
any establishments nearby. I can still live without one,
but it's nice to know there is a good place where I can
have a beer and watch football at the same time.
(especially because that will be hard to do at my apartment) |

Can't remember the name off-hand but it's next door to One-Eyed Jacks in Roppongi, big place.
With your back to Almond at Roppongi crossing, cross the street and turn left. It's just down the first alley on the left, can't miss it.
Enjoy,
