(this isnt strictly a teaching topic so I hope the moderators will be nice about it as its a charity thing and a teachers social night...)

Me and my flatmate hold a pub quiz every Monday evening: its full of TEFL teachers (and a few other assorted expats) and its loads of fun and very sociable (for those of you who are not familiar with what a pub quiz is, its a sort of team Trivial Pursuit in a pub only with more shouting, cheating and arguments) - you dont have to come with a team: you can just join any group who think you look semi-intelligent.

Its all in aid of a charity for African kids, theres lots of daft prizes and a bottle of whisky for the winners and even a bottle of wine for the losing team, and like I said its very sociable (everyone stays around afterwards for drinks) so its a quality night out: it may well be the best excuse youre going to get to go out for a beer all year...!

Its at Moores Irish pub (just across the road from metro Tribunal, line 1, two stops north of Sol), and its at 9:30pm every Monday night, starting again after our summer break on the 5th of September: hope to see you all down there Very Happy

Not at all, you must have met a dodgy barman or been in the wrong Moores: they are a chain, so its the one at Tribunal metro: hope you make it on the 5th Smile

So, its all in place: bottle of spirits for the winners, bottle of wine for the losers, quizmasters, lots of daft questions, a ton of very nice people coming etc. etc. - all we need now is you!

It starts this Monday the 5th of September (and every week onwards) at 9:30 pm at Moores pub in Tribunal (just outside the metro stop) - come down, bring some mates if you can or just yourself and come and make some new ones.

Its really sociable (without feeling false like all the dodgy intercambio nights you get here), its a lot of fun and its for charity too Very Happy

I may very well be coming along to this on my own, either this Monday or the one after. Do you think it'll be ok for me to come alone?! Or will I look like a complete loser? I'll introduce myself to you when I get there Mr Moore.

Dont worry about coming on your own: many people have in the past and hooked up with a team and met a load of people - the idea (apart from the great excuse for a booze and the charity thing) is to build a community: it worked very well last season, we all met some really nice people, so please dont be shy: do come down and dont forget to come and intoduce yourself to us: see you there

OK everybody: the pub quiz starts tonight - I do hope you can make it down there: we have done a ton of publicity for this season and there is a whole bunch of regulars from last time coming down so this seasons will be bigger than ever - its really an excellent way to meet people here and is a lot of fun (as well as making money for charity that is)

So come down, its tonight, Monday 5th September (and every Monday afterwards) at 9:30 pm in Moores pub, just outside the Tribunal metro stop - hope to see you there Very Happy

Went very well thanks: a bunch of new faces and a load of regulars from last time. Cheating-wise it was more that most Americans seem not very good at whispering so their quieter British cousins took full advantage of this! In the end a half American-half Ozzie group won the whisky and the pot, but we do have a second prize of a round of drinks and the losers get a bottle of wine and along with the end of round bonus prizes its hard not to come out of it with something.
Hope more of you can join us next Monday (Moores Pub, 9:30pm metro Tribunal)

Just out of interest where do you get the questions from? a website? It's coming to the end of summer here in Istanbul and things move from the pavement to inside. We are thinking of having a pub quiz in our local soon too. Apologies for hijacking.

We get the questions from a mixture of Pub quiz books we got from the UK, encyclopaedias, hunting around the internet, and the fruits of a great deal of time spent lazing around the pub exchanging utterly pointless information.

Recommend you get on amazon.com and get a few books posted out to you to start you off. PM me if you need any specific titles: cant give you our own question collection as we are setting up a resource for our charity to use them for other people to set up other pub quizzes around the UK and the world.

Recommend you do it with a mate for bouncing ideas off each other and to stop you getting hoarse and stuff - its tremendous fun to write and present the quizzes though - like I said, pm me if you need more info, or if youre ever passing through Madrid then drop by and see us.

Thanks Moore. I have a couple of books. problem is they are next to Cosmo and GQ and part of the bathroom library, so most of my friends know the answers. Shocked I guess I'll need to get new resources( a bit like teaching)
Good luck with future events.

Cheers, I'll be landing in Madrid on the 20th, so will definitely check out the pub quiz sometime after that.

I also have the same idea as Sarah, since I'll be alone as well. Don't really mind going to places alone though since I'm not exactly an introvert, but glad to hear it's a welcoming bunch!

Just a quick new plug for our charity pub quiz: it went really well last week, and should be even bigger this week: lots of new faces and a lot of fun, very sociable.
Just a reminder of the time and place: every Monday night at 9:30 pm, in Moores pub, just outside Tribunal metro stop.
Hope some of you can come down, just think of it as the best excuse youre likely to get this year for going out and having a beer on a Monday night Very Happy

There you go: you can even meet Spanish people there! Its actually been a good mixed crowd, a lot of Americans and Brits as youd expect, but French, Belgians, Spanish, Irish, Ozzies are mixed in too. We had a really good crowd last week, hope to see even more of you down there this Monday, its really starting to take off.
Just as a reminder: first prize=a bottle of whisky and half the pot, second prize=free round of drinks for team, last prize for team with least points=bottle of wine, plus various daft end-of-round prizes.
Entry=2 euros (one for pot for winners, one for charity), not particularly expensive in terms of Irish bars, they do v. cheap glasses of wine, and the spirit measures are generous, if not to say dangerous.
For those of you still unsure what a pub quiz is, its a sort of team Trivial Pursuit, you can come along alone if join a team who look short of players, its very sociable, full of TEFL teachers and other assorted expat types.
Venue: Moores Irish pub (not my pub, sadly, just couldnt think of a better user name except my local), just outside Metro Tribunal (line 1, two stops up from Sol), 9:30pm every Monday night.
Hope to see lots of you down there: its all in a very good cause and its nice to build an expat community too Very Happy
