"Thank you for calling Telmex. An agent may or may not be available to torment you shortly."

Virtual monopolies suck. Telmex has to be the finest example of such. Outlandish rates for long distance. A customer service bureaucracy that works like completing a jigsaw puzzle that's missing one piece. And slowwwwwww.

I have been lucky of late to not have to deal with them. But I dread moving day when it all changes...

Hmm. Down here I have had good luck with them. After dealing with the bureaucracy of immigration, I was surprised to find it took Telmex only three days to get a phone line put into my apartment (and they had to wire in a new connection).
But you're right about the exorbitant rates for long distance. I can't understand why it's cheaper to use a pay phone on the street than the phone in my apartment!

Skype, people! US2.3 cents/minute all calls to Europe, North America, Mexico City, and several other locations. Great sound quality. Easy to use. blah blah blah. I also bought a US number for $4/month (voicemail came free). When friends in the US want to talk to me they dial that number and it rings on my computer here, and I don't pay anything to talk to them.

My understanding is that Skype has crappy sound quality unless you have a broadband link to the internet, which I don't have. Broadband is what, 350 pesos a month? That buys a lot of phone cards.

Before getting the $349 per month broadband connection, I had dialup, paying around 95 pesos per month. I tended to dial in a lot, or got disconnected by Hellmex, so, when the phone bill came, those 200 + connections at 1.49 a pop made it cheaper to swtich to broadband.

I use Skype. Broadband connection is costing everyone in our block 90 pesos a month. I don't have my own account so can't call to landlines etc. but I can call to other Broadband users for free - which is extremely handy for calling home.

Telmex has just bought out part of a Colombian telco called Telecom (or something or other). I never pay much attention to these kind of takeover thingys, so I just thought it was an administrative sort of thing. So imagine my surprise when sauntering down the street the other day, I noticed 5 hefty, overalled telephone technicians poking out of a manhole all with Telmex emblazoned on their backs! Shocked

Gadzooks! Its spreading!

Egad, Slim's minions are taking over! Quickly now...you will need several fistfuls of garlic, a crucifix, and a picture of Frida Kahlo to protect yourself!

Skype was recently bought out by eBay. I'm not sure how this will effect the service, but Yahoo is developing a similar service called Dialpad and Microsoft is also developing their own "voice over internet" service.

I talked with an American guy here in DF who was trying to start up a business pithcing VOIP (voice over Internet protocol). He mentioned having some difficulties as Congress is being slow in loosening up privatization of telecommunications here in Mexico. I wouldn't doubt that well-connected Carlos Slim has something to do with that opposition.

I have the Prodigy 'Hogar' package: unlimited dial-up all weekend and outside business hours during weekdays. The cost is 99 pesos on top of my phone line, which comes with 99 free local calls per month. I find if I dial-up on average once a day, I don't come anywhere near that total. (Of course, I don't make a lot of local calls: La Crucecita is small enough that if I want to talk to someone, I just walk over to his/her home. And besides, hardly any of the other teachers or students even have a phone!)
