Recently, a student asked me in class to explain the nuances of taste in the Inniskillin 2002 Pinot Noir Black Label wine. This despite the fact we've covered this material repeatedly, particularly in the lower levels.

Keeping my cool, I explained calmly that the wine presents delightful aromas of red licorice, fresh cherries, violets and earth framed with light nuances of smoke and spice combined with hints of butter. It is medium-bodied with pleasant fruit flavors, balanced acidity and good length.

The student seemed satisfied, until our DOS butted his big head in and insisted it was "margarine" not "butter." Needless to say, this undermined my classroom authority completely and students no longer believe anything I say.

What do you think I should do?

Confront the DOS and demand he apologize in front of the class?
Start a anti-DOS campaign behind his back?
Ignore him?
Tell everyone his two favourite wines are Baby Duck and Grey Nun?
Something I haven't thought of yet?

This DOS has always criticized me and never supported me in any way, if that helps.

Anyway, it "is" butter right, not margarine? Parkay maybe?

No self-respecting Pinot Noir would ever admit to tasting of margarine.

Your DOS really crossed the line on this one. Buy him a couple bottle of cheap California Caberne and tell the students how much he loves the stuff. If that doesn't work, spike his glass with margarine to develop his tasting abilities. I'm sure a full apology will be coming soon.

Tell your students that your boss is silly and likes to play jokes. Then confront him in his office and ask why he feels the need to make an @ss of himself in front of your students. If that doesn't bear fruit, go over his head and tell the Center Manager what happened and ask for HIS advice.
