News has just hit Australia that an English teacher (Payne) in Medan has just been arrested for having "0.1 gram of crystal methamphetamine on the man and another 2,162 tablets of illegal drugs and five syringes when the police searched his house." Having once lived in Medan myself and known of other Medan teachers who have found themselves in the same predicament (ie arrested for drugs) , I think to myself, "Can I smell a rat?".... |

You probably can smell a rat, but if you close your legs and open a window, the stench should dissipate soon.
I am highly suspicious of the circumstances surrounding all of the 2000 or so people who have been singled out as drug users/dealers during the last couple of months. I've been to Indonesia and met some people and so I reckon the whole thing is a big set up that goes all the way to the top and out the bottom again.
And so on and so on and so on. |

Oh sure... any bule arrested for drug offences is just bound to be innocent. Couldn't possibly be guilty. Just look at that poor girl who was minding her own business when some mean crooks stuffed thousands of dollars worth of ganja into her boogie board bag... like they often do just for the hell of it.
I smell double standards here, not rats. |

mmm, yes, he seems rather guilty - and very confident too. saw him on the news tonight and he was confidently predicting that he'd be home on a year or two....wonder who he's planning on paying off???
btw, does anyone in medan know if he actually WAS teaching - which school? curious to know if he was in a suspect job at a suspect school. given all the drugs found at his home, i wonder how he found any time for teaching and about his motivation for being there in the first place. it sounds like going to the apotik (where yes, it is ridiculously easy to get lots of prescription drugs no questions asked) was like going to a lolly shop for him - he brought one of each (do a search for the article on waspada's website which lists all the drugs they found, quite a range!!!) |

It said in the local Adelaide rag, "The Advertiser" he was due to start teaching in 2 weeks. |

If you get to the evening news stage, it's not likely you're going home any time soon - the chance to pay up has passed. I've known of bules to pay their way out after their arrests have featured on one of the morning crime shows, but anything more public than that (ha!) means example time. Usually.
For lesser offences, there's normally a "grace" period during which the culprit/victim (depends on your point of view) has the chance to find the cash to pay for a get out of jail free (well, not free exactly) card. Allegedly. After that, it's full steam ahead, and remember, all drugs are as bad as each other here. Weed? Smack? Same deal.
Of course, this is all heresay...ahem. |
