Say, anyone into a get-together for drinks in DF Friday, Oct. 7th? I will have three American teachers in town for a TEFL course. I'm sure they'd love to meet the Mexico veterans. |

Chido! I was thinking that the embassy plan of awhile back is a no-go. Just...too...boring, as a proper Canadian event should be.
I was thinking to find a bar to sponsor a TEFLers (or English teacher's) get together, maybe on a monthly basis?
Since you are first to respond, Leigh, what kind of place would be good? A sit dwn pubish sort of place? Something with music? Patio? Upscale? Raunchy (haha)? you vote. |

Bing! Lozwich comes sauntering in from Latin America forum, and her ears p'rick up at the thought of a monthly do in DF!
I'm considering spending my Christmas in dear old Mexico, and would be arriving somewhere around the 12th of December in DF.
You have been warned! Two months to sort out the monthly do, and get it ready for the Australian!!!
But seriously, have fun guys, wish I could be there this month... |

A get-together sounds really good. We might want to think about something perhaps even grander, like a get-together on the next "puente" when folks can come for the long weekend. I got space in my house, even if Im not exactly in DF. Im close enough. though.
Unfortunately, I cant come on Friday now... something got in the way. Sat is good.
I would prefer if we start in a pub-like place... we can get raunchier later as the beer flows and the mood swings that way.
Guy... you mean to tell me that Canadians are boring!!!???!!!
We DO need hockey here... eh? |

I talked with several of the local teachers here, and my brother-in-law, who is an expert on anything that starts with B, ends with R and has an A in the middle, and we're good to go. A little place called 'el patio de mi casa', which translated means the patio of my house, which is not a patio on my house despite the name. ahem
Leigh, you'll be missed. I had told everyone there would be this fabulous girl coming in from Toluca. Next time.
Actually, Toluca for one of these events would be perfect. You want to host the next one? I'm not sure about puentes as a lot of people here prefer the beach (hint to those of you in Acapulco, Vallarta, Cancun, etc.).

BTW...this get-together is open to all... posters, lurkers, the thrill-seeking, those lost in Mexico, the uniformed men who crank that damned music box and expect money, all my illegitimate children, anyone who knows good card tricks, and especially YOU.
...
I'm joking about all my illegitimate children, I hope you all know. Only those named in paternity suits are invited. |

If they turn up could you train them as English teachers, please? I mean most people give them money so that they will move on, out of earshot, don't they? |

On a similar note , is it common in other parts of the country for people to get on city buses and sing and/or preach for money? Only about one in fifty actually has a decent singing voice. I think most people here give them money just to encourage them to get off at the next stop. |

I most certainly agree. I know I shouldn't say bad things about Mexican traditions, but I really, really hate those guys. Now if there were a little monkey with the tin cup, that would be a different story. |

Gosh - Im not the only one who finds the hurdy-gurdy guys obnoxious. Its not the music box so much but rather how aggressive they are in asking for money! I refuse to give them anything just because of that.
Hey - if having a get-together means I have to make the sacrifice to go to the beach, Guy.... Im sure I could survive! |

Hmmm...no one from Acapulco in here posting....lurking maybe? What other beach locale would be a good spot? If the Yuc and QRoo weren't so far, I'd be there every weekend.
Oct. 7th is locked up, and for those of you that can't make it, you can count on me for putting up some pics.
Pipe in if you want to plan the next one. Oct. 28th or Nov 4th? |

Bad news. I leave DF on the 7th, in the PM. Passing through on my way to Guanajuato. |
