Newbie teacher x is coming half way round the world after being offered employment by email and telephone interview. He is told in writing that he will be picked up at the airport and taken to the free school accomodation which is part of his salary package.

He arrives late at night to find nobody there to pick him up. After waiting a long time he is unable to contact the head teacher and so gets a taxi to a hotel and contacts the school next day. Upon presenting the receipt for the taxi and hotel:

Should the school pay for the taxi and one night in the hotel?

Unfortunately Hector, not everyone has your sense of justice and level of professionalism. The poor unfortunate in my tale was sacked after a trumped up charge and evicted without a single New Turkish Lira in compensation for the taxi and hotel.

Can you explain the "trumped up charge" which caused your hypothetical teacher to be sacked??

If I book a flight and have a conection to catch, and I miss my flight because of some delay. Then I have to be transported to a hotel put up for the night and feed & watered. All at the cost of the airline.

So yea the school should pay, if they said so at the start. What's changed.

A good point Calsimsek.

To a previous poster:

It is irrelevant why the said teacher was sacked. This thread is about whether the school should pay for the taxi and hotel.

Sense of justice seriously irked here. Whether he was fired or not, they should have payed for both since it was totally their screw-up, and arrangements had been made in writing prior to his arrival.

In practice, this happens to a lot of people coming to language schools here, and the teachers are stuck with the cost, and nobody does anything about it, so realistically the school is off the hook, since why should they go out on a limb and pay for stuff no one else pays for? And the McSchool is born...

Please vote justme.

After the poll has run for a few weeks I intend to present the poll results to a rep of the school in question and ask them to honour their promise.

Voted. But trying to get money from a school for something like this is like trying to squeeze wine from a stone. I should know. It's not worth getting your blood all angried up...

Angrys the blood! Very Happy

But to be fair he should have been paid the money. I'm still trying to get money back from my old school the name of which I shall change to ILM ARE A BUNCH OF THEIVES, in order to protect the innocent.

Think my blood is getting angrified...
