I know there are a lot of Brazillians of Japanese extraction living here. I am curious as to what kind of visa they get to be here. Are they given new pasports because they are ethnically Japanese.

They are not pure Japanese they are descendants of Japanese immigrants to Brazil and have Brazilian passports. They can get descendant visas for being children or grandchildren of Japanese nationals, but they are still foreigners and can still be deported for overstaying.

If you're really interested the most informative and readable book I've read this year is "No one home: Brazilian selves remade in Japan."

ttp://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0804741824/qid=1130497034/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-0778980-6570559?v=glance&s=books

BTW, from talking with people in the local Brazilian and Peruvian communities in Kagawa it's clear that there is a healthy trade "back home" in fake and "borrowed" certificates of Japaense ancestry.

I make regular trips to a Brazilian food products truck that stops in front of a particular apartment block at 11am on Sunday. It's a great source of chicken hot dogs made in Saudi Arabia, guarana, and some pleasant Spanish/Portunol conversation.
