Hey Guys,

So I get an email today less than a week before I leave saying that my position has been filled. So it looks like, not by my own wishing, that I will be doing what everyone has told me and come to Taiwan first to look for a job. I will be packing up my Diploma and TESL certificate and hitting the streets to find a job. I would like to find a job with a chain school like Hess, but am not sure if that would work being I only have a College Diploma. Please help me out guys where could I look and also what is the recommendation for money to bring? Do you bring travelers checks or exchange currency in the airport.

Thanks,
Argon

In terms of money we got by on quite little for about a month - maybe around $1300AUS each.
Most of the schools we encountered were not interested in qualifications - they were interested either in practical teaching experience in your home country or specifically in taiwan. My girlfriend has TESL and five yreas teaching experience but many schools cared very little - specifically the chain schools, but she got head-hunted in the end by a school who wanted only registered teachers.

I have recently had a series of telephone interviews with Shane schools and although it helped that I am a qualified teacher with a years experience I was told that they do take people on who just have a degree.

If you have a diploma, you can't legally work here unless you also have a TEFL cert.

Minimum education requirements are a BSc, or alternatively a diploma (Associate's degree) with a TEFL.

You will need luck if you read and abide by Aristotles outdated ten steps!!

The interesting thing is that there is nothing within his ten steps that actually helps a newbie teacher become successful. His steps are all based upon his outstated opinions that working illegally in Taiwan is superior to working here legally. How does that help someone become successful?
