Hi,
How do you find out (being an english speaker/reader) about cool bands i.e. where they are playing and when?
Is it prohibitively expensive to see a band play?
How do you go out and do stuff if the trains shut down at 11P? |

check out this site and go to the OSaka section of the web site. As for getting about after the subways close.....Stay there all night. Alot of club in Osaka are in the Shinsaibashi area and in walking distance of each other.

| Depends on how far you live. Taxis in Japan increase their fares at night by about 50% |

say you lived 4 or 5 stops on the subway line ( i'm going to live in the ikuno area ) how expensive is it to take the train?
when do the trains start again?
everyone just stays out all night?
can you bike these distances if you have a bike?
what do people do?
are there neighborhood bars?
I'm not a big partier. But I might want to go out once in a while. Esepecially wondering what you do it you work late and want a drink - or even to see a late movie.

| I know of one band that plays at Sam & Daves. Never heard them play (General union members) but they are supposed to be quite good. Will send you a PM. |

Trains start at about 5.30 am.
Ikuno is around the Tsurushashi area. You can take a bicycle and its about a 20-30 minute bike ride from Shinsaibashi or 1,000 yen by taxi.
Lots of stuff open a few discos are open till 7am and some bars close when the last customers leave, 3 or 4 am. Avoid the snack bars in Namba as they will empty your wallet. Go for the local snack bars or eateries in your neigborhood. Avoid the ones with a hostess standing outside. |

Last train JR/ subway is around 12 am OR 12. 30. trains are still running at 11pm. |

Initial fare is about 600 yen and then based on km after that. If you live in different areas the first person out can pay the 600 yen and then the others cover the remainder or split the bill for the remainder of the distance. You could probably walk from Namba to Tsuruhashi if you had to but I would take a taxi for any further out (Minami Tatsumi etc). I think Ikuno is bigger than it looks and Tsuruhashi (on the JR line) is right on the edge of it). |

If you live in Ikuno-ku (Imazato, Kita/Minami Tatsumi, Shin-Fukae, Shoji), you have to take the Sennichimae subway line (the pink one) to get there. The last Sennichimae subway from Namba leaves at about 11:40 or so. Biking there takes about 30 minutes, but there's a HUGE hill between Namba/Nipponbashi and Tanimachi 9-chome/Shitennoji you'd have to climb.
The last train for the JR Loop Line depends on which side of the city you live on. If you're on the Kyobashi/Tsuruhashi side, the trains run about an hour later than they do (until about 12:45) if you're on the Bentencho/Nishi Kujo side (those trains end at about midnight). It's worth noting that if you live in Ikuno-ku, the closest Loop Line station there is Tsuruhashi. You'd still have to take a taxi from Tsuruhashi.
Coming home fairly early or staying out all night is the great dilemma with living here. I personally biked home at about 2 or 3 in the morning when I used to live in Osaka. But now that I'm in the suburbs, biking is no longer an option. And regardless of how much fun I might be having in Osaka now, it's not worth staying out until the first train for. So I get home at about midnight or a little later.
If you don't want to sit in a bar or a night club until 5 in the morning, do what most Japanese do. Go to a family restaurant and stay there until the morning. That's not too expensive.
Choose wisely. |

as a previous poster said, all night is the go. leave your run til late so you don't end up blind and spewing at 3am.
the last train home is a drag. worst thing about living out of the city centre. |
