It would appear not, or...
1) There are so few jobs they don't want to advertise the place.
2) The pay is so poor who would want to?
3) Internet is censored in Myanmar.
I have seen several chatty postings on this and other forums but not a *single* posting from anyone who is currently working in Myanmar. Some very practical questions arise...
a) Why are you there instead of somewhere else?
b) What are typical wages for degreed/undegreed and experienced/inexperienced ESl teachers?
c) What song and dance do you have to do to get a work visa or do most people work under the table?
d) How much of your salary can you save in hard currency?
e) Lifestyle: food, accommodation, expats, entertainment, local girlfriend, etc.
f) Working in Myanmar compared to the same in the rest of mainland S.E. Asia [by persons qualified to compare].
I for one would like to see something on any of the above subjects by a qualified poster. I have posted a lot of useful information under other names on travelling in Thailand, China, Malaysia etc and working & living in Japan, Cambodia and Vietnam. I'd sure like to see something coming back on Burma. Pleeeease! |

Mingalabar. Hello.
Myanmar is wonderful....at least I think so.
To answer your questions..
International Schools are the best route here if not the only route here
Pay varies, but international schools tend to be competitive out of necessity. My salary is around 26,000 US a year and I am able to live very comfortably on that.
and Yes, internet is censored in Myanmar....but I can post on Dave's....today anyway.
I am unable to use my Yahoo email account.
I have visited all of SE Asia but I have not worked in any other country in the region for a long period of time...with that in mind, my impression of Myanmar is that it is much more "rustic" than Thailand....I think it compares nicely to Laos and Cambodia. I see lots of Indian influence and there is a great melting pot of religions present.
Very under-developed...poor roads, public transport....WWII old Japanese buses...etc.
Most people enjoy a good chew of beetle nut...
Good cheap food and cold beer...
Beautiful smiles
Wonderful friendly people.
I am very happy with my decision to come here.
I have been in Myanmar for two months.
Cheers,
Nomad Dan |

Hey Nomad, what kind of qualifications do you need to teach at the International schools in Myanmar? |

Same as anywhere else - you need a B.Ed. (Bachelor of Education) or a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (like the British P.G.C.E.).
Furthermore you need to be Teacher Certified, in your country of origin.
The CELTA and all those other dubious backpacker diplomas/certificates won't get you in. You need to be a real teacher, like ghost.

26,000 US a year.. I bet you could live very comfortably on that! Sheesh, thats about what I make in Korea with the cost-of-living several times higher!
