I just checked how much baggage you r allowed to take on international flights....20kg...this sounds crazy, I have travelled with the same airline several times with loads more.

NOTE: American flights allow 32kg PER BAG (X2).

I have never checked baggage limits before maybe it was the same and they just let it go. But this is crazy, my case weighs 5 kg with nothing in it!
if i took two empty cases that is half the allowed baggage weight. Idea

In times of rising fuel prices, baggage weight limits are going down and airline tickets are going up.

I know that Air Canada is dropping its baggage restrictions from 32 kg to 20 kg on all its int'l flights sometime this October for the reasons Glenski mentioned. I think most European airlines have been going with 20 kg/bag for a long time now. Maybe it is because North Americans are bigger therefore their clothes weigh more. Wink

Speaking of north American sizes, I once sat on a plane (to JFK) right behind this dude, big-boned, over 6 feet height, etc. The whole trip it felt as if he was sitting right on my lap. His seat appeared fully reclined when it was in the upright position. When he reclined it, I could barely breathe- forget about eating a meal (the tray was almost crushed). To top it all, he as was quite unfriendly when asked to please not recline his seat during meals.

20 or 30 kg total for luggage plus another 7 kg for hand luggage has been the norm for international flights in my experience. There are ways however to get around things. I think you can also pay more money to bring more luggage. Airlines are far less likelier to weigh your hand luggage than your normal luggage. In addition to your hand luggage you are also allowed to take a laptop, unweighed. So, if you have a laptop then automatically discard that from your weight. If you don't have a laptop then buy a cheap laptop bag, or an approximation of, and put all of your heavy belongings into it, books, etc. This should save a few kg but why would you want to bring so much anyway? You just have to carry it all when you get there.

20kg is really not much I have fitted it all into one bag....its definatly 20kg for me as i checked it out with the airline...paying more is pretty expensive

No kidding. 20 kg can be a lot of stuff if chosen wisely. Good exercise in paring down needless junk.

My modest proposal -- charge passengers for their seat according to their body weight!

If they're gonna start charging big boys like me extra, let's hope they also provide seats that will actually accomodate my big a*s (maybe they could also link increased bodyweight to strength to luggage allowance, so I'd be allowed to lug on what I could carry - a tad more than 20kg - whilst the frail old lady types wouldn't need to sweat it worrying about more than their handbags).

You're not talking about American travel, friend. I've been to China 3x. My bags were weighed on one trip -- I had to pay more than $500 for excess baggage! The stuff I bought did not come close to that amount -- plus I was forced to check a bag filled with breakables. And, yes, many things broke.

It's possible to get by with heavy lugguage -- but be prepared to pay through the nose it you are checked! If you are packing clothes, buy a cheap cloth duffel type bag. That will cut out 4 kilos!

Just pack carefully and weigh everything.

Read the ticket carefully.

You can take 20Kg Checked luggage
5 KG Hand luggage (make sure the bag isn't too big for some carriers)

Also perhaps...

Laptop Bag
Camera Bag
Suit Bag...

So put a heavy jacket bunch of shits and pants together in the suit bag.

Get a bigger than average Camera bag and put some of the breakables in there

Take the heaviest books in the laptop bag with you

and then use the rest of your clothing as packing around anything that is breakable to go into your checked luggage which should be full of bulky but light items.

All set, too much for one person to carry! No extra charges.

Actually it might even be good idea to be a little UNDER in your weighed luggage. Then the armfuls of other crap wont set alarm bells ringing. Also super sweetness to the check in person is of course a good idea. People will be captivated by your sweetness and let you walk past with an elephant!
