Ontario is expected to press its case for an immigration agreement with the federal government, one that would mean millions of dollars in new federal funding for Queen's Park to help newcomers settle here.

Does anyone think that this will actually translate into decent working conditions for ESL teachers in Ontario, a la k~12 teachers? There has been some talk of connecting adult education with ESL and improving the conditions, but so far it's just talk. I personally think it will translate into a lot more volunteer positions for retirees, upper middle class home-makers, and university/college TESL students but very few actual jobs.

It's ridiculous that if you spend a year in a university to get trained as a k-12 teacher you get a good salary, a union etc. but if you spend the same amount of time to get trained to teach ESL, you get lucky if you get a part time job.

I don't know, but the fact that the Ontario Government of past seem to take joy in cutting funding to the ESL programs and the school funding I would assume that this would only make our jobs harder.
