To anyone thinking about taking a job with ACC in the Nagoya area, beware. I worked there for a little over a year, and all in all, it wasn't a terrible place to work. There is lots of freedom in lesson planning and the other teachers were great, but the owner is only looking to make money (fair enough) but he doesn't really care about the staff or the students. He recently changed the entire curriculum so students now have half of a class taught by a foreign English teacher and half taught by a Japanese teacher so that he didn't have to have as many foreign teachers and therefore save money. He hired people at less than the going rate (significantly less) saying it was for a probation period of three months and then wouldn't renew contracts of good, experienced teachers who wanted to stay because he said that he would have to give them a raise. There was a rumor that he fired a teacher after bringing her to Japan because she didn't have the right look. There is a hight turnover of Japanese staff, which tells you something of how he treats his staff.
If you haven't taught before and are just looking to come for a year and make some money, then it is not too bad of a deal, if you have nothing to compare it to. But if you have any experience and really want to teach or stay for longer than a year, then I suggest looking somewhere else. |
