Turks are always amazed when they hear and read about stories like this, from more 'developed' countries in Europe and North America. Turks often ask one, why it is that many foreigners (non-Turks) prefer their animals (pets) to humans. This is basically unheard of in Turkey, as is the habit in many Western countries of caring more for pets than other humans.
This also brings up the point, that Turks, indeed, usually have a much wider (extensive) social network, in comparison with most of us Westerners.
One recalls the Head of a certain Kolej telling one, that if he were in trouble, there would be at least 10-15 close friends (male) who would 'drop' what they were doing, and come to his rescue immediately.
One can imagine that the above scenario would be a rare one in the countries we hail from.

Interesting to note that the person (David Harper) who left over a million dollars at his death, worked in a modest job as a gardener for most of his career.
If a gardener (average pay, around $10-$12/hour in Canada) can become a millionaire on that kind of salary, then it might be possible for TEFLERS to do the same, provided they skimp and save throughout their career.
Not easy, because many Teflers love to blow money in pubs and other places where money disappears rapidly. It is the social nature of the profession which can contribute to spending money.
