Hi y'all TESL Turkeys.

Does anyone know of an indoor swimming pool in Istanbul where it would be possible to swim daily laps? I expect to be over there soon, living and working in the downtown district.

"Downtown district" ? ... hmmm ... I've been here 14 years, but got no idea where that might be :-(

Unfortunately there aren't a great number of indoor pools in Turkey ... obviously the big hotels have them ... and there are a few sports clubs ... but most of us find the prices they charge too much.

However, if you're coming here to work at one of the k12 schools, then you'll probably be allowed to swim for free ... if they have one, that is. I'm lucky ... my school has one, though we can only swim when the swimming club ... or the polo club ... or the such-and-such club ... isn't using it ... amounts to about three times a week :-((

By the way Cyn, please don't criticize my English ... I'm only a poor mathS teacher :-((

Kerban hotel at the top of sırsselviler, just off Taxsim square. I think a day pass is 10 YTL. They also have monthly prices.

Thanks crumpy and dmb.

Fear not everyone! I don't usually correct anyone's English for free - but in those earlier posts, I felt 'they were asking for it.'

Interesting about 'the downtown district'. That's how my potential employers described the location of the school. I wonder if that expression means anything to anyone else?

Former posters are being obtuse. It is obvious that your employers are referring to the Taksim area or that general area.

Why not post some other gems your employer has told you.

Good local salary?
Queen of cities?
Bread at 20 cents a loaf?
Bridge between continents?
Bonus?

There is a huge bonus in Istanbul : 'Mark Loyd' does not work there.

Scott is obviously unaware that a Turkish bonus is one that is promised but not delivered.

How is your 15% coming along?

I believe the 'promised but never paid bonus' is international, not a Turkish invention.

I'm being recruited by an American company; the monthly salary is set, does that make things better? I realize they might try to work me to death, but I don't think they'll try to pay me less than the contract says.

Round-trip ticket pre-paid by them, no health insurance, no bonus.

Is the Taksin area a bad thing?

Taksim is my favourite area, personally. Location is great, very vibrant and lively. Depending on your school, you should have a great time.
