I heard about the incident from a Japanese first, and have been reading the Yomuri times to keep updated about the case.

Find it quite bizare. Especially the bit that said they suspect she might have been using her mother as a guinea pig for her chemicals.

Yeah, it seems like there's something about it in the paper everyday. It's murder, just unorthodox methods. Personally I think the media coverage is overkill and will just turn this girl into sort of a sensationalized celebrity killer along the lines of news media in the U.S. do all the time.

And, it's got to be horrible for the family to have it splashed in the news everyday. But it could be worse. When I lived in Mexico, they put pictures of decomposing corpses and murdered and mutilated bodies in newspapers and on TV every day. It was sickening. There are about a dozen tabloid newspapers sold at every newsstand solely dedicated to publishing pictures of dead bodies and sensationalizing.
