I am relocating to Vietnam in August. I am debating between purchasing a laptop in the USA before I leave or waiting until I arrive in Vietnam. Are prices any lower in Vietnam? Are major brands available there? Any tips arguing for buying in one country vs. the other would be much appreciated.

not much choice for laptops in Vn.
Another option, if you are going thru Bangkok, you could buy there and get 7% VAT efund when u leave. But Id go for option 1. You guys have it made for electronic prices.

Don't forget that the country of purchase usually determines the country of warranty support. If you purchase the laptop in the U.S., you won't have warranty coverage in Vietnam. If you purchase it in Vietnam, you won't have coverage when you return to the States.

If you purchase in Bangkok, you will likely have coverage all over Southeast Asia, including Vietnam.

fyi - new laptops start out at around 29,900 Baht in Bangkok (that's $757 USD)

I saw a brand new NEC in a shop window yesterday for that price. (with a Celeron, not a Pentium)

You could buy an Acer on the web as I did. They have an international travelers warranty and list a service facility in HCMC.

That's a good suggestion, Hari. Purchases on the Web often include different options than purchases made in a store in a particular country.

Since, I don't see any Vietnam posters in this thread Confused ...

Laptops in Vietnam, even used ones, are quite expensive. I looked at the wall of a local internet cafe and the used ones for sale were 1500$, 1800$, and 2100$. Yes, they were fairly newer models. But after living in Korea and buying a lot of computer parts for my own little mini-home-network when I was there, I am still shocked by the prices here. If Thailand is selling decent ones for 750$, you have the opportunity to head to Seoul (Yongsan exit on the blue line subway), or are already outside of Vietnam, I highly recommend bringing any and all computer related electronics with you. Save some cash and your computers 'in-erds' will be higher quality stuff.
