Hi guys,

I'll be in Jakarta at the end of this year or start of January. I know that with the petrol price increase, it has had a knock-on effect with the economy. How much has this impacted in real terms? eg. a plate of nasi goreng from a warung? McD? Taxi and bajaj fares?

Thanks.

From my experience being there 2 weeks ago, MACD and food places are generally the same. Taxis are more expensive though. they are impacted.

Difficult to generalise. Some costs appear unaffected so far but others are definitely on the rise. Nasi goreng spesial at my local warung up from 9000 to 10000; many locally produced items in the supermarket unchanged but many imports now more expensive - the latter probably due to exchange rate fluctuations than fuel subsidy effects.

Domestic air fares are certainly more expensive than last year due to increase in avgas prices, although there are still some low season discounts around.

So, on the whole with day-to-day living expenses, no great change?

As long as you stay away from the hotel bars and their crazy cocktail prices you'll be able to swim in Nasi Goreng (if indeed you wanted to).

Life is still cheap here (literally).

Well I'm not a drinker so I'm not too worried about that, although I do like to go and listen to some live music, and paying 30k for a coke is a bit rude.

I was more worried about general day-to-day expenses like food, transportation and general items.

It's only been a month since the fuel price rise, and ramadan has just finished which means that things are just getting back to normal for business.

I believe that there will be a big effect on the cost of living, over the next two months we may see a lot of increases.

For a start, try and rent a house now. I have heard from friends that the price increased by 20% or so when they tried to negotiate the contract. One friend who had just signed a 1 year contract on a house had the owner try to put it up by around 20%, after he had moved in. Told him to get lost.

Taxis are getting too expensive for sure. Bajaj are usually dearer than taxis in South Jakarta.

As I said, I think we won't really know the full impact for a month or two.
