Thoughts on Torreon, Mexico?????
I have a job offer, with a need for an answer after this weekend. I'd be moving in about 3 weeks!
It would be a job for 1.5 years.
I'm interested in hearing what people think about the place....I have heard great things about the people, but not so much about its location.
I've made my list of pros and cons. I'm a 25 year old female, single, highly active and athletic into outdoor sports. How much of this lifestyle am I going to have to give up (please be kind, I know there's a lot that I'm going to gain....but being fit is a high priority for me, and this is my biggest sticking point at this moment...I'm going through different waves of anxiety, but am stuck here for now). Would I be able to go out for a run by myself? What about biking?
I've heard it's a pretty safe town. Is this true?
Would it be worth the experience (no one can really answer this but me, but I'm curious to hear others input) to move here for this long, knowing that it's not a location I'm crazy about? I've never lived in Mexico before and want to learn Spanish, but never thought I'd really want to live in Mexico either.
Any insights or experiences shared would really be appreciated.
Thanks- l.c. |

Great city. Lots of nice mountains nearby, good opportunities to go biking, not that far from the border, weekend trip to San Antonio is stretch, but doable. Like 6 hours, isnt it?
It doesnt have lots to do like Mexico City but I love Torreon. Go for it. |

Thanks so much for replying....I thought it not a good sign that people had viewed the post, but not said anything. I am going- now I just have to pack up my life in 2 weeks!
Are we talking mountain or road biking, and should I bring my own (I'm flying so it will be tough with everything else I need)?
Thanks again! |

About Torreon....I think you will probably enjoy yourself if you come to Mexico in the right frame of mind. You are coming to teach English and experience the culture. If the emphasis is placed on that rather than spectacular weather or scenery, etc. you will do just fine. Schools generally try harder to please foreign teachers in places that are more difficult to attract them. Torreon is known for the number of garment and automotive assembly plants located there. I have heard the area referred to as a dust bowl.
You should probably assess the biking situation once you have moved there. It may not appeal to you as much when you see the traffic in action.
Have a great time in Mexico and let us know how it's going. |
