Anybody live there or been there? Im hoping to get a job in China sometime next year, and this city looks alright. Any information you can tell me about it would be great. Night life? Things to do? Foreign population? Clean (to chinas standards at least)? Wages? Thanks in advance

search in Dave's archives. I described it recently (I sojourned there last summer, and had a swell time; others agreed wholeheartedly with my impressions of the place).

People either seem to love it or hate it. I was there twice, each time to do a few weeks' teaching at one of our branch schools to fill in for a sick director. Thought it a total s**tpit: dirty, polluted, dreary, noisy. One of my Chinese friends told me that one of the translations of the word "Chengdu" is "city of dust."

But, that's me. I did visit Du Fu's thachted cottage as he's one of my favorite pacifist poets of ancient China. They also have the world's best panda research facility.

I visited recently and now I am considering moving there to teach. I liked it! But I was only there for like a week so there are tons of people who could give you a better assesment I'm sure.

I've been in Chengdu for the past three
months teaching at one of the universities.

There is quite a large expat community, if
that appeals to you. The Chinese say that
Chengdu (Sichuan) is famous for four things:

1. Delicious food (spicy)
2. Beautiful girls (smooth white skin)
3. Panda bear (endangered species)
4. Wine (rice wine / liqueur)

Chengdu has a "relaxed" feel about it.

There's an Irish bar that is said to be
popular. You may care to CLICK HERE

Prior to Chengdu, I was in Kunming ("The
City Of Eternal Spring") for eighteen months.
The weather is getting quite cold & wet in
Chengdu as we head into winter. Kunming
is a better alternative in that regard

Rolling Eyes .
