Hello Guys,

I would like to know if anyone knows anything about the Well American School in Taoyuan? They claim to have at least 8 foreigners does anyone know someone who works there?

Also, it is my understanding that kindergarden and public schools are forbidden to foreigners. What is the deal with buxibans which operate in the daytime and offer classes to little kids, are those forbidden to foreigners?

I would like to know for this school seems interested by my services as early as December 5.

Thank you,
LeTouriste

Taoyuan is fast becoming one of the worst places for foreign teachers on Taiwan.
Schools will change their English names at the drop of a hat just to avoid their bad reputation and make getting the next batch of foreign teacher suckers in the door that much easier.
You need to post an address, telephone number, and names of the supervisor if you want to do an accurate background check.

Good luck!

The above is a discussion about this very school. It's a complaint laden thread written by someone who worked there. Of course, the author has his/her bias, so be aware of that. I have no first hand information to offer you though. The forumosa thread should serve as a warning to proceed with caution though.

I've lived in Taoyuan county for several years now. Sorry, Aristotle, my experiences here are somewhat different than yours (do you have any experience with this area?). There are numerous large and stable language school companies in the area. I have yet to see schools change their name suddenly for the reasons you provided--and I've been observing the schools scene here for some time now. One of the worst places? Hardly. I'll agree that Taoyuan is no Taipei. It has far fewer amenities that might appeal to the western expat (especially a newb). However, it offers pay rates that meet or beat the best Taipei has to offer with rents and a cost of living that are much lower. Add to this the fact that you are still within an hour of Taipei and you can see why Taoyuan is a pretty good place to live and teach.

Could you please provide concrete evidence to support your claim that Taoyuan is one of the worst places on the island?

Don't pay any attention to Aristotle. He is on record for claiming that Taichung, Jiayi, and Taidong are all terrible places and must be avoided. It seems that he is working his way around the island. Penghu, you are next, so you better watch yourself with all those sunny beaches and fresh seafood (and of course those hidden traps for foreigners).

I would probably give this school a miss based upon comments that have been made about the school in the past.

In answer to your question, yes classes with children under six are likely to be a problem for you to teach no matter where they are held. Kids under six are allowed to learn English, but there is just no capacity for foreigners to be employed to teach at schools that enrol such young kids (kindies and preschools). In cases where an after school cram school (buxiban) offers kindy classes I think that you will find that these classes are being offered in breach of the regulations that the cram school must operate under. This is however more an administrative problem with the school rather than a deportation issue for you.
