Am determined to move to BA in Feb/March 2006 for the start of the new term. Problem is i have no idea where to start with regards to finding a job, somewhere to live etc. Does anyone know of any sites that have the required info?

it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY that you'll be able to find a job before you get here. however, it won't take very long to get some hours once you're here. it takes about a month to build up to a full schedule... so about of 2.5 months until you're making a decent amount of money.

you generally only get paid once a month through institutes - sometime in the middle of the following month. so if you start working at the beginning of march, you will get your first paycheck sometime in mid-april (but it will probably be a smaller one since you've been building up hours).

set up costs are relatively expensive. as with jobs, it's much easier to find a place to live once you're here. for the first month or so, expect to stay in an expensive apartment for foreigners (~$500+), a host family (~$350) or a hostel (~$300). to be comfortable, i would bring AT LEAST $2500 of savings if you're planning to start work right away. if you plan to take a tefl course or travel, bring an extra $1000 per month you won't be working. (and an extra cushion wouldn't hurt). generally, you have to pay rent the 1st-5th of the month, which is before you get paid for teaching, so keep that in mind.

this is all in US dollars and approximate. and of course, it depends on your lifestyle and other variables... try not to make the mistake of frivolously spending all your dollars in the beginning because of how cheap everything seems due to the exchange rate...

if you don't really have to worry about money, then great! stay at a hotel in the microcentro, recoleta, or palermo for the first few days to give yourself time to find a more permanent place to stay once you're here.

Some of the best advice Ive heard in awhile...and wearily looking back, I wish I wouldve taken it when I arrived. But then again, you can get 4 empanadas and a soda from Solo Empanada for around 5 pesos, so why not get it 5 times a day???

it's not that they don't have vacancies. it's just that in argentina, most things are done face to face and generally speaking, they start hiring when they need help. so if they have a vacancy in march 2006, they will be hiring around mid- to late-feb 2006. both my employers told me that they recieve CVs all the time and it only matters who is in the inbox when an opening pops up.

i sent my CV out at the end of July. i got a bunch of interviews and began working for 2 institutes less than a week after sending my CV out. getting a job without a face-to-face interview was not an option. i'm not saying that there isn't any institute in buenos aires that will hire you without a face-to-face interview, i just haven't heard of any. besides, it's a good idea for you to check out your potential employer before agreeing to work for them. i chose not to work at several places after meeting the director of studies...
