I was just reading a story in a magazine by an American woman who spent a few years hostessing in Tokyo. I have heard about hostessing a lot, and how Western women can make all this money and they don't even have to sleep with anyone if they don't want to. And that's pretty much what the woman said in her article. I am not saying I'd want to do this myself, but I am just curious - what's the deal with hostessing? Anyone ever done it or known someone who has? Being paid that much just to sit there and look pretty seems to simple to be true. |

It is. Most are asked to provide "other services." At the most innocent, you have to flatter, put hands on knees and make sure they keep ordering booze. At the worst.... you don't want to go there. |

You get paid according to how much you can get a customer to spend at the club by flattering him and cooing in his ear, and if you don't deliver, he doesnt spend money on booze..... and you don't get paid.
That means all the other girls get the nice Rolexes and fur coats. |

Have heard that most of the people running those places have had hard luck lives and hard life stories. There are a lot of university girls that work in those places, and it's said that they do it to line their bodies with accessories.
In Sendai and as I guess happens in most big cities the girls dress up in all their fineries(long dresses, make up etc, etc) stand on the street hoping to entice somebody up to their bar for a drink. I walked past a couple once and tried to talk to them. Was pleasantly surprised to get an answer in excellent English. |

A friend of mine worked in a hostess bar. She said, there is a lot more than just sitting with a customers looking pretty and praising him.
She had to learn a special way to peal grapes, pour drinks, and how to flirt. I forget what else she said she had to learn.
As written above, she only got paid by how much the guy she was with drank, and tips. Sleeping with a customer is an option but not done at the bar. |

yes, i have a few friends who quit there day jobs a took jobs either as hostesses or as workers in those clubs where guys pay just to talk with women. they all work for agencies who then send out girls to bars and clubs as needed. they are not required to sleep with the guys or anything, just to flirt with them and make them think that they will sleep with them to get money out of them. they make a lot of money, but work every night and have no social life at all.... |

I think that "extra services" are required of you if you want to keep your job. But its not in the actual job discription. |

Not at all.
Working as a hostess in a bar is exactly what it sounds like.
Show up, call some customers, try to get them to buy drinks.
If you do not have customers show up you will still get paid, just less.
The more customers you get and the longer you can keep them is where the bonuses come from.
As for most girls having "hard lives" and working as hostesses becuz of their hard lives, thats complete nonsense.
Most girls working in the bars are there becuz they need money and want an easy job. It severely conflicts with their social life which is why most girls quit after a few months, but they have ways to hook you in also.
Most higher end pubs force the girls to wear elaborate outfits that they will buy for them. If you work for a certain amount of time, usually a year, then the outift is free. If you do not complete that amount of time then you will be forced to dish out cash on a dress that they chose for you. Usually around 70, 000 - 100, 000 yen.
Higher end pubs are were the money is, but it is also where you will be forced to spend a lot more money. Most of these high end bars have clothing shops associated with them and the managers are usually always riding the girls to buy new things. The girls can say no, but most dont becuz it will just make work more difficult.
Lots of loops in that business so just be aware that its definitely no free ride. |

My friend works in a fancy hostess bar. She is making all kinds of money and investing it. She says, she will be able to retire by the time, she is 25 years old.
Because of her and this thread is why I always laugh when someone says, Japan is a man society. Yea right. The man works all the time, gives most of his money to his wife. The little he keeps for himself, most men go to a hostess bar to give it to some young woman.
I wish it was reverse. All I had to do is keep myself looking attractive and tell some woman, "You are beautiful and so smart!" while pouring her drinks! |

John,
Maybe you should become a male host, where you get some 50 year old snack mama or bored housewife spend money on you as her 'toyboy' and buy you nice clothes.
Takes her husband's money and spends it on male hunks at a male host club. How about it? |

Thanks for the advice!
I've heard of those host bars. Only a few though, I think one is in Shinjuku.
The problem is I am too honest. I am probably the worst lier in the world. I would probably end up insulting too many of the 50 year old overweight snack mamas!
You see a lot of these women who work in Snack bars has been manipulating men for years, and when they were girls, they manipulated their male teachers and other boys. I see it now. Little girls on the average have better social skills than boys. They have develop out standing sweet talking skills. |

50 year old women are rare in the male snack business, unless they are in the high end pubs.
The majority of the girls going to the pubs were about 20-35 years old.
They go for the same reasons the men go, maybe they'll get lucky.
Not a mans society?
Well last I was aware that term really related to job status, income, and the respectul figure.
Now if thats a women in Japans society then Im draining the sink on both ends. |

I would never have imagined young women going to a host bar. Women have a lot easier time to get lucky.
I did see a documentary about some married women like to go to host bars because no commitment!
I've got to find one to see for myself. |

John, a lot of the young women are themselves young snack hostesses who have finished work for the night and go out to a club or they are on their night off. they are not 'working' with their own customers, but often like to be spoilt and indulged themselves by hosts. As many of these women are on high incomes (a few make 5-10 million yen a year income) they like to spend money and be pampered by hosts.
Dont forget because of the work hours they dont have much of a social life- its a bit like conversation teachers, the hours are very antisocial as you are working when everyone else isn't. |
